After seeing SciGuy's huge CQ coho, it seemed like a decent idea to try to head some of those fish off at Dungeness Spit. Except that I've never fished there for salmon. John Wayne is a great ramp but has anyone ever fished the inside bay area there for coho? Ideas? Warnings?

Thanks,
Rogue

It is always worth a try. Seaweed can be a problem, especially on big tide swings as you can get a pretty good back eddy inside the Spit. It shallows up pretty good on the S side of the Bay approaching the river mouth. Deep water just S of the Spit (240' or so).

Since we're open for everything in MA 6, you might also want to prospect for some blackmouth, too. There should also be some chums showing up. If launching at JWM, be sure you keep the buoys in the proper spot when exiting/entering Sequim Bay. A pretty good spit on the outside (run to the second red buoy before turning N and you'll be fine). Middle Ground sits just under the surface on the inside (east) of the bay as you exit.

Depending on the numbers of non-tribal commercial crab pots, you might want to work the 60'-80' contour going NNW towards the Spit. Rocky Point (to the E) and down to Diamond Point also turns out some fish. Discovery Bay can be good for blackmouth in the winter season. Should be some around now, too. Fish between Cape George and Becket Point in the 120' depth.

If you go outside, remember that the in-bound shipping lane runs right past the tip of the Spit. The outbound lane is outside the yellow buoy off the Spit. Coho are caught out there, too.

Good luck.

Thanks very much BB, a very informative post- sounds like you've done some fishing around there! What with the gale forecasted though, I think I'll be forced to stay home.

RF - you're welcome. Not a lot of pressure on the fish around here right now. If more show up, there will be more boats out there. I hope the weather breaks for next weekend when I'm planning on being on the water.
