Thank God.

SIDE NOTE--Great Grandfather's stepdad ran the competition with The Daily Zero until it was bought out by The Zero's owner. During that time, while my Great Grandfather worked as a printer's devil, he held a side job as a Western Union Telegraph Boy by bicycle and helped wire together Olympia's first Telephone switchboard, which was only a piece of plywood with some nails with copper wires wound round each one. The man later went on to invent the coin-op binoculars and a series of steam valves for coal-burning navy ships.

well, the daily zero isn't going anywhere...it's "just" being printed in tacoma. the paper's basically been the TNT-light for about 2 years now. tends to happen when big corporate orders layoffs in the newsroom and everything becomes copy-pasted from the USA today we print earlier in the evening and the tribune and AP.

while i've never thought it was an outstanding paper, i've never been able to figure out why it's so hated by conservatives and liberals alike. of course it's going to have a liberal slant...look at the demographic of olympia!

i guess i'm just a little bitter...one of the most historically steady jobs out there dying out, kind of ironic to be looking for another printing job on craigslist...

After that paper was bought up they moved to Ballard. Would have been around 1905-ish.

My brother works for The Seattle Times and his wife for the PI. All print journalism is laying off and cutting back as it drifts into obsoleteness.

One reason the Zero is hated so much is because it is totally spineless. It only endorses incumbents, regrdless of party, it takes the police version of events as gospel, even when their own reporters get beat up; ie: when some bum gets tasered repeatedly by the OPD and dies on the spot, they accept the claim that he died of natural nauses (true story) and writes editorials bashing anti-law enforcement conspiracy theorists. In essence they are just a Local Government & Business Establishment Shill along the lines of "Praise Stormans Inc.! We hate all other grocery chains!" And "We need to run Lakefair Haters outta town!" Also: "Regardless if that IT Bus blew through that stop sign, that motorcyclist was on crack and so it wasnt IT's fault they got smeared."

Half the time they dont even print alot of the stuff that's happening around town, especially if it might make police, fire & city hall look bad.

Then again, they aren't nearly as bad at The Chronicle, which won't even publish pictures of blacks or Mexicans.
