Im in the market for some new tires for my truck. Its going to have a lift soon so I can get up to 35's on it. Im down to two choices, BFG All-Terrain KO's, in a 305/65/18 (33.7 x12.2)or the Toyo Open Country A/T's in a 285/75/18 (34.8 x 11.3). Any of you guys have experience with either brand? pros and cons?

the BFG A/Ts are pretty susceptible to hydroplaning, and if you have to go through any slimy stuff(clay etc) they're about worthless. i'd go with the toyos.

I have Pirelli Scorpions on my new F150. Haven't tried them in snow yet but they feel good and get rave reviews.

BFG's or Michelin AT2's. Never understood the idea of the big treadblocks. Worthless.

Flip a coin. I've ran a few sets of the BFGs,and a fews sets of the Toyos. I've never seen less than 50k out of either brand on a 1/2 ton. Both have comparable traction on/off road.

BFG's or Michelin AT2's. Never understood the idea of the big treadblocks. Worthless. Thick mud, heavy snow, or loose sand. Like Sunday said, if you don't leave pavement there's no reason to waste thousands on Meaty tires. Im seriously contemplating keeping around 2 sets; Highway tires for regular use, long drives & trips w/ the camper, and another for winter's mud and snow. Of course, if you feel you need a Monster Truck for your daily commute to your 9 to 5 office job, so everyone will know what a manly man you are, there are fake monster truck tires made for hwy use only. You see em in California all the time. The guys at Les Schwab will snicker at you, but from far away no one will be the wiser.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. The truck is not a pavement queen, it will see offroad use, that is why Im putting a small lift and more aggressive tires on it. And why Im looking at 34-35" tires, for addtional ground clearance. The two tires in question are about equal in pricing so I guess I have to decide if I want a bit shorter, wider tire in the bfg or a taller, narrower one in the toyo. Keep the feedback coming, I appreciate it.

I have lived in and driven extensively the mountains of Colorado and Washington, mud and clay of Ohio and Texas, and never once wished I had bigger, wider or blockier tires. Usually, I was passing or pulling out the macho trucks (think red, liftkit, calvin/hobbs, NASCAR reference, scrotum from the hitch). Look at the people that drive offroad for a living....Colorado highway patrol trucks...pizza cutter tires with small treadblocks/siped. I will continue to cover the backcountry with my Michelin LTX AT's and have a jerkstrap for when I come up on you. Wish I had a picture of the two Toyota Boytrucks that I passed in the mud with my little soccer mom GrandCherokee...it was like they saw a ghost.

On my second set of Toyo's on the big truck, and granted, I haul some heavy weight with them ... I'm not happy with tread life at all. I'm still waiting for an E rated KO to come out in the 285/70/17 so I can give 'em a whirl. I have the KO's on both my little rigs and absolutely love them on those rigs ... but I won't drop to a D rated tire on the big one just to try them. Come on BFG, lots of people asking for them!

Cooper makes a pretty sweet mud terrain tire. It is the Discoverer STT. I was looking at Toyo and the BFG's and wound up going for the Cooper based on the recommendation of a friend. So far so good. They are quiet on the road and roll really well for an aggressive tread pattern. The price was in the same neighborhood as the others, perhaps a bit cheaper. No issues with water or mud yet and they have handled all I have thrown at them so far.

I just replaced my Toyo's with the BFG's. I wasn't happy with the Toyo's in the snow after getting stuck in my driveway last winter.

I may be wrong and by no means want to correct Bob, But that looks like a toyota to me. Why not? Corey does it non-stop! I guess it is ... I just glanced at the "sloped" front end look and figured it was a Ford. Not a real truck w/o a Cummins

If you didn't have that wimpy Ford, I would have passed along more info Nope, its a Toyota. I wont buy a ford until they put a decent motor in the F150. The 5.4 Triton is gutless. Im happy with the 5.7 in the Tundra, 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and ability to tow over 10k lbs in a double cab 4wheel drive works for me. Not to mention the 6spd tranny is super smooth. Im sure Ill get plenty of flaq from the Ford, GM and dodge lovers, but I did drive them all and bought what I thought was the best available truck at the time.

Great tire and great price compared to the Toyo's.. Toyo is the Nordstrom of tires, over-priced really! I'll run the Coopers from here out, the set I have now has close to 30K on them and about 40% tread left on my 1/2 ton dodge and I never rotate my tires..... They wear perfect..... Keith

"The 5.4 Triton is gutless"
First person I've heard that from. It's a truck not a sports car. But I bought mine because it was too good to pass up even though I was debating on the Tundra. And, it's my third Ford truck. $27k for a fully loaded Lariat with 54 miles. Don't know about the Perelli tires but there are really good deals right now if you have the dough.
Ford F-150 vs. Toyota Tundra Review Handling The Ford F-150 and the Toyota Tundra have approximately similar tires. With their comparable turning circles, the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 most definitely handle about the same into and out of tight spots.
Drivetrain The Ford F-150's engine is substantially more massive than the Tundra's. Note that more sizeable engines may use more gasoline than smaller ones. Torque is the force that lets you accelerate quickly, and in this respect, the Ford F-150 is markedly more powerful than the Toyota Tundra. The Toyota Tundra could learn a lesson or two from the Ford in terms of torque.
Utility The Ford and the Toyota Tundra can accommodate the same number of passengers. The Ford F-150 is likely a better choice than the Toyota Tundra when it comes to transporting cargo, especially if you often need to carry a lot of cargo or sizeable pets. Towing is significantly more the Ford F-150's forte than it is the Tundra's.
Convenience You'll most definitely take the Toyota Tundra for a fill-up approximately as often as the F-150.
Comfort While the front cabin in the F-150 offers a bit more head room than the Toyota Tundra, there really isn't much of a difference. The F-150 provides more head- and leg-room to your passengers than the Toyota Tundra does.
Dimensions The Ford F-150 is somewhat heavier than the Toyota Tundra. The Toyota Tundra's tank is approximately the same size as the Ford's, though the F-150's is somewhat bigger. The Toyota Tundra rides lower than the Ford, which is a good thing for its center of gravity and ease of access. The Toyota Tundra and the F-150 compete for the same parking spaces. The Toyota's shorter wheelbase will give a more agile feel in daily traffic. On the flip side, the Ford is likely to have a smoother, more stable ride.
Cost The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. The Toyota Tundra is markedly cheaper to get to the dealership than the Ford F-150. The Ford F-150 doesn't pale in comparison to the Toyota Tundra with respect to fuel economy. The Ford F-150 won't save you much money at the pump compared to the Toyota Tundra. The Ford F-150 isn't much more expensive than the Toyota Tundra as far as MSRP. The F-150 is an affordable speedster.
Overview The Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 have the same basic warranty.

Thats YOUR opinion. I think they are nice but, for example, 390hp vs 381 in the tundra is not a big deal. Same with 407tq to 401. And Im not sure what you mean by tows better, but the ford and the toyota's towing capacity both out gun the dodges. Also the dodge for some reason only has a 5spd tranny, where the toyota, ford and gms all have 6. Regardless I think all the new trucks have come along way from what they were and are all good choices. None are perfect. It just depends on what matters most to the individual buying them. I also didnt want to turn this into a debate of whos got a better truck. I know that alot of you own trucks, and last time I check ALL trucks have tires...so I thought I would ask for input on what you guys thought or what your experiences were with the two brands I mentioned. Ive narrowed it down to those to thru much research and whats available in sizes Im looking for. I do appreciate all the feedback.

i cringe every time someone wants "luxury" in a truck...
give me something that's 4wd, manual transmission, manual hubs and t-case, cranks on the windows, hell, i don't even care if it's got power steering or a/c(ok, a/c is always nice).

yeah but your $500 junker, I mean truck, sit's in the driveway. I'll tow it around for you if you pay me though. You can crank down the windows and it'll be like having old time a/c.
All the trucks out these days are pretty damned nice. I wanted either a Tundra or another Ford. Money talks with me and the Ford deals right now are way more truck for the dollar than Toyota. It was about time the market adjusted. $40K+ for a truck was getting obscene.
