Getting down to the short strokes on the shop. Drywallers didn't show last week when they were supposed to, so I did the finish sand and mud. Missed a few small spots, but I'll get that this weekend.

Got the interior primed and painted, 25 gallons of paint.


Pretty bright in there. That stacked plywood/OSB is my nemesis.

....and the throne as well. Christened it tonight.

Boat shed is done (20'x40'), and will have less crap in it once I have a chance to move into the other side of the shop.


Also finished my first "non-shop/house related" woodworking project..

A set of stairs for my mom & dad's dog who is old and can't jump up on their new bed.

Just have to install trim and case the windows, install a few exterior lights and have someone do the gutters and it will be done.

Then is all begins again with the house. It has been a good training ground.

Great project and great work! Those 100 hr weeks are paying off.

How did you decide on how much lighting to use? I'm thinking of placing two 48", two tube flourescent fixtures in each 1/3 of my 24 x 36, about 8' in from each wall, with maybe a couple more over the permanent workbench area.

I was talking to a garage door man yesterday, and he described two insulated steel doors, one with R 3 and the other with R 11. What did you find and choose? I don't intend to super-insulate my garage, but I definitely want some, since I have 2x6 stud walls.

I saw it live and in person last week. Its pretty impressive. Andy's shop is what dreams are made of. I even got the chance to marvel at the "ditch". Its going to be a dope spread.

I have 8 lights in the boat shed, 20'x40', the other two are above the open garage door in the rafters. They throw a good amount of light, so your plan of using 8 lights, plus additional lighting in the work bench areas sounds correct. I have enough plugs to install over 20 lights up to if need be, but that would be serious overkill.

I will probably augment the lighting in the shop a bit, adding a few more lights above my work benches. I also mixed natural light tubes with standard tubes. The natural light tubes threw off an almost blue light, so I toned that down with one of each in each light fixture. $18 for the light fixture, $6 for each set of tubes (buy the 12 pack). Adding more light isn't very expensive. I used the T-8 32 watt fixtures and tubes. I also disn't hardwire them in so that if a balast went bad I could just toss the light and put in a new one.

R-11 on the garage door. R-24 (maybe r-28) on the sidewalls, R-30 something on the ceiling. The insulators did that, so I'm not 100% sure.

Smoker will be detached from any structure. If it burns, fine. Don't want to build anything else twice, except for maybe a small detached smoker. Fire pit will be built, but we are trying to figure out where.

Looks good, any of the lights switched independently ? Work bench lights are a must in my opinion, my eyes are getting old and light helps tons... progress I dig it. I work as a superintendent for a general contractor an I swear I love this stuff, now keep up the momentum..one rule.... no chairs on jobsites... save it for later.
