It's not funny that people kill themselves. The Darwin Awards could be labeled as a form of "gallows humor." It's not the death that is funny. It's the incredibly stupid acts by which they kill themselves that's funny, and hence, the Darwin Awards.

Biology and ecology have no sense of humor or tragedy. If people who do stupid things remove themselves from the gene pool, the human species increases its fitness for survival over the long term. From a strictly biological perspective, that is a very good thing.
