I think they all campaign on virtue and family values these days. They all like to say they are on the moral high ground. Just very little morals in any of our elected reps.
Only people that seem to make it to our higher positions in guberment tend to be those that think their crap dont stink and the rule apply to everyone else. The "do as I say" type.

I think it's utter bullchit and make believe when Repubs say that it's no different than when someone else does it.

It is different, because it's the only selling point that the Repubs have gained traction with...we're so gosh darn God-fearing and good, and we love our lives and families far more than Democrats who support abortion and gay marriages!!

Put yourself on the Republican "look how much better I am!" pedestal, and it indeed is a longer and harder fall...and it ought to be.

The thing is, it won't matter...the massive amount of poor white Republicans who continually vote for Republicans in direct contradiction to their own interests and well-being vote for them for only a couple of reasons...and among them is that they hate gay people and abortion rights, and they think God is on their side in this hate.

The Fundamentalists are aligned with the Right because they can work together on these issues...and those folks aren't voting for Democrats anyway, so if (and when) a Democrat takes the same hit, it won't hurt them nearly so much, because those folks don't vote for Dems anyway.

Sooner or later the alliance between the gay/abortion hating poor whites and the Republican Party will fray, and when it does the R's will lose a big part of their voting base.

It will probably take a third party to get it done...one that leaves all the self-righteous religious bullchit at the door and campaigns on actual issues.

No one clamoring for tort reform has ever had a loved one killed or irreparably damaged by poor doctoring...just like everyone hates lawyers, until they need one...and then the lawyer is their best friend.

Malpractice insurance too high? That's a problem between the doctor and his carrier, not between the doctor and his patient...I mean, we can't be havin' anything get between a doctor and his patient now, can we?

"Frivilous" lawsuits don't make it in front of a jury...and no one who has lost a limb...or a life...thinks there's anything "frivilous" about it.

Again, even with the slanted example you gave, the problem is not with lawyers or patients, it's with insurance carriers.

Get a new one.

If none of them will do it right, then start your own...it's the American Way, after all...develop a product better than the ones available, and start counting your money.

Tort reform is part and parcel the same as the current debate about health care...it's all about the money, and those who can't compete want a government backed handout to preserve their untenable positions.

Government doesn't work? Really? If you really believe that, doctors and pharmaceutical companies, and HMO's, and other health insurance conpanies...if you really believe that, then let 'em in the "free" market and beat 'em by being better.

Unfortunately for them, "being better" means "be affordable", something that none of them have any interest in being...in a "free" market, they'd get their asses kicked, and they know it.

It's ironic how the "free market" advocates are always the ones first to seek to restrict it when it actually results in the competition it's supposed to result in.

I'm picking and choosing here since there is way too much on this thread to address all at once. Health insurance is corporate america, which is what lead to the financial meltdown of the world economy (corporations that is). Check the CEO salaries in this link as it pretty well explains the high cost of insurance.

We, the american people, need to come together against the common enemy, corporate raping and pillaging, and level the playing field.

The numbers I've read are at least 200K people die in US hospitals each year due to medical errors. And that number has to be very low ball since hospitals and the entire medical profession tries it's hardest to hide medical mistakes and, for the most part, aren't required to track or report them. Add to that the rubber stamp our FDA has become. We are nothing more than guinea pigs hooked to the health care matrix with money extracting IV's in our arms. So called tort reform will only increase medical errors. But don't worry Hankster, however flawed your reasoning I'm sure there's a pill for that. Don't sue if it makes you sick though or we'll have to add you to the hypocrites list.

And I can't take my mind off that "other" Argentinian woman story . . . in the early or mid 80s wasn't it? Just can't remember who it was, but it seems like it was alos a southern Republican. For the rest of you, ask yourself who you trust and who looks out for your well being.....you doctor or your lawyer. You LWWJ's just stick with your lawyers. If you all do, we can have a big swing in the electorate next cycle.....a lot less of you around. Sad that the fringe of that side thinks every Doc is out to chop off their wrong leg or give them some untested med but their trial lawyer chasing down ambulances and placing ads on TV to sue sue sue has their backs(I mean they only ask for 50% of any claim, heres looking out for you). On the up side I now see where in the party their health care proposal comes from.

The koolaid is the individual doctor trotted out as being sued for some minor issue. Most suits are against hospitals, pharmaceuticals and/or medical device manufacturers. The real players and the real money behind stripping you of your right to sue. A surgeon removing the wrong limb or leaving a tool inside you is rare but usually due to a facility with system wide bad practices. A facility that has hidden it's incompetence for a long time.

I'll say it for the fourth time in this thread...if you have a problem with malpractice insurance being too high, then you have a problem with your malpractice insurance carrier, not a problem with your patient, or his lawyer.

Don't like your carrier's rates? Get a new one. It's called "the market" and "the market" makes the rates, not your patients, and not your legislators.

A doctor can pull off a miracle emergency triple bypass at 3am on a Tuesday and if the patient awakens with so much as a hangnail, lawyers are like sharks on chum.

The overall mental state that justifies such actions is just as much to blame as anything else in the equation.

Slipping on a bathroom floor used to mean you were not looking where you were going and paid the price, nowadays I wouldn't be surprised if the person yelled "Jackpot!" before "Ouch".

BS. You better have real deep pockets as no lawyer is going to throw good money after bad unless he's sure of a win or a settlement. Now a class action is where it's at for a lawyer. But a class action means it happened to a lot of patients which means no individual doctor was involved. See my last post.
