That upper section must be pretty skinny in Sept. with all the braids.

Just heard from a Region 6 biologist.

Another error in the printing of the regulations. Should have read September 1 instead of July 1.

The Dept is working on an emergency regulation and hopes to get it posted today - July 2.

There are spring Chinook in the river and they need protection. Looks like the emergency reg will allow the take of JACKS only until September 1.

Finally got answer from WDFW

Bill-

I apologize that you were we not contacted on this issue. I appreciate this being brought to our attention. We inadvertently opened that section to adult retention during July-August and are in the process of filing a regulation to require that adult salmon be released. As for the September – October timeframe there are harvestable numbers of fall Chinook and coho expected to return.

Thanks

-Kirt

WDFW FISHING RULE CHANGE
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091
http://wdfw.wa.gov

July 2, 2009

WDFW corrects fishing rules
for the Quinault River

Action: Corrects fishing regulations for the Quinault River. The regulations are:

Immediately through Aug. 31, 2009: Daily limit six jacks only. Minimum size 12 inches in length.
Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, 2009: Daily limit six salmon, up to two adults may be retained and may be any combination of chinook and coho. Minimum size 12 inches in length. Release chum and sockeye.
Effective dates: Immediately through Oct. 31, 2009.

Species affected: Chinook and coho.

Location: From mouth at the upper end of Quinault Lake upstream to the National Park boundary.

Reasons for action: The original regulation was intended to provide harvest opportunity for adult fall chinook and coho. The July 1 date in 2009-2010 Fishing In Washington Sportfishing Rules Pamphlet for retention of adult chinook and coho was inadvertently included in the regulation. During July and August adult spring chinook are present in the system and require protection in order to meet conservation objectives.

Information Contact: Jeff Skriletz or Barbara McClellan, WDFW Region 6 Montesano office, 360-249-4628.

Thanks for bringing up the question. If you hadn't asked, who knows how long it would have been before the mistake was corrected.

WONDERFUL JOB:::::: So nice to see something on The web that really makes a difference in Something. That fishery has been in trouble for a long time. I can remember years ago, When in the mouth it was not uncommon to see lots of huge kings rolling . For the last 4-5 years the numbers have been drastically reduced. Way to go guys. Catch & Release.
