U.S. troops accused of damaging Babylon's ancient wonder

The U.S. military did major damage to the site of one of the wonders of the ancient world while converting it into a base, the United Nations said in a new report.

An U.S. soldier looks over the ancient city of Babylon in Iraq in 2004.

The site of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was converted into Camp Alpha shortly after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

The troops and their contractors caused "major damage" by digging, cutting, scraping and leveling while they were revamping the site to meet military standards, the U.N. cultural agency, UNESCO, said in a report.

"Key structures that were damaged include the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way," the report added.

The Ishtar Gate, an entrance to the northern part of the city, is decorated with animals that portray the symbol of the god of the city of Babylon.

Just blame the "shrub", don't look at the last couple paragraphs.

" The U.N. report noted that U.S. troops were not solely responsible for ruining the 4,000-year-old city. Before their arrival, local residents had contributed to the damage, mostly through development, the report said.

"The features of the western side of the city of Babylon disappeared many years ago due to encroachment by agriculture and development on the archaeological zone," the report said. "

Why would someone not post the whole story. Kind of like when I was in Strasborg and the French lady tour guide was talking about how "you" guys bombed the city in WW2 like it was a bad thing. Strasburg was Back and forth between France and Germany 5 or 6 times. Then she pointed to a building and said it was built to be a syphilis ward and that the disease came from the States also and I'm thinking what about the smallpox that claimed the lives of most native Americans.

It is popular to blame Bush and the US (note the report came from the UN) because then the US will pony up some cash to appease the blame givers. Never mind that the locals had already done significant damage through the years. If this is Bush's fault then the heat wave of the last week is Obama's since he was in charge when it happened.

From the start I was against it based on the cost.

Hindsite is perfect and everyone now knows what that endeavor has cost us.

The country needs to pull the reins in on spending.
Seems no one knows how to say the words "I can't afford it" anymore.
