Yeah, I know I'll probably be cast into the fiery pit of eternal hell for even asking but has anybody fished the PW on a two hander? I got invited to a steelhead trip of a lifetime this fall. The guys are strictly fly dudes so I'll respect their decision by not swinging any metal. However, some of the flies they showed me don't look any less menacing than a PW so I'm wondering why not try it?

Anyone willing to share their thoughts at the risk of being ostracized for life? laugh

I'd prefer to give the unknowing a right proper Catching Clinic and marvel the percentages who'd then bask at the altar of change.

Though I've seen it sooooooooo many times, you'd think the novelty would wear off.

(It don't)

Always be prepared, if you left the spoons at home you'd be kicking yourself for a lifetime :P

If your intention is to be "respectful" by fishing the worm in a handicapped manor, your intention will be lost on them. Bring a spoon rod and tell them a sappy story about your grandpa teaching you to fish with a spoon or something. Fish giant, articulated bunny flies on the fly rod some/most of the time. That way you are practically fishing the worm anyway and no one gets sand under their Orvis wading belt.

Rolled up on a fella that gave me the usual song and dance about why I should be using the fly for the aggressive fall steelhead that were in the river. I as always was polite and explained that I was following the rules and enjoying myself fishing my way then I left.
I came down the trail the next day to see the same cat playing a fish on his fly rod! I thought, no hard feelings and RIGHT ON what pattern are you using? He just ignored me. I stuck around long enough to see a 1/4oz gold cleo hanging out of the 12lb steelhead's mouth!
Moral of the story is who cares what they think! If they give you a hard time just ask them what their fly is supposed to immitate anyway! Probably the same damn thing as your metal!
Just because someone is using a fly outfit doesn't in any way shape or form make them a better angler. It's all personal preference!

Few things more funny, than a cast of Cabela's Characters streamside, marveling the nuances associated with one of their uniformed crew..."casting beautifully" against Alaskan splendors as a backdrop curtain.

Folks that marvel the Hind Titt, are more than welcome to same.(grin)

Hey I'm a fly guy and say fish the way and with what you want. Just make sure when you guys share a run you all cast and step or you fish the water they can't cover. They should have not issue, although they may want you to follow them thru the run. If you wan to swing the two hander with a PW just get some pink rabbit strips from a fly shop.

It's always a pleasure to make room for one of Cabela's Characters and marvel their innate ineptitude.

Hard to wipe the smirk away though, when they pinch a #4 Blue Fox and scream "Fish On!".

Good stuff guys.

For a virgin trip, I don't mind just throwing flies. I have already decided I won't bring any of my Sage gear rods, strictly throwing flies and I understand that I will give up a number of fish by doing so but I'm willing to concede that point...for now.

But, I figure if I can throw it on my fly rod, anything is fair game. Since I'm a PW virgin as well, what better way to pop the cherry than on a Z-Axis 9143?

Saw a BC TV Show,in which Boat Based "Purists" were "Fly Fishing" for Halibut ala 4oz trolling sinkers affixed to Mooching leaders and tossing Herring that were hooked in accordance, via two-handed Speys.

Still cracks me up.

As per ALWAYS...you can bullshitt the fans, but you can't bullshitt the players.

I'm certainly no purist and the guys I'm going with are not either. But they are OLD and are doing me a BIG TIME favor by just allowing me to go and hang out with them. So...I'll stick to their rules.

Just put a dab of marabou above the 6" worm you are chucking with your two-hander and you will be fly fishing just fine.

That having been said, 6 inches of pink bunny fur with a cone head will give the plastic work a run for it's money any day of the week.

I have seen a few local guys using stuff that looked a lot like that, they say they get fish.

I don't get why many Steelhead Fly anglers think it is more pure to swing flies and look down at nymphing for Steelhead. Seems to me what ever catches fish is cool.

Yeah, I have seen those but a PW is a lot easier to "tie". rofl
