holy crap!!! 2 pages of bs about b.s. whats the problem with the guy? since when were peoples thoughts supposed to be sensored what happened did he piss off someone from three rivers or the wsc. dont kock block a guy for speaking his mind....... any ways i have been looking at petersburg does anyone have any experience with that town? what emenities are available? how long does it take to get there on a ferry?

I lived in Petersburg for 6 months several years back (my early 20's). I lived in a tent, caught fish and drank way too much. Never felt so alive.

My perspective is one of a punk kid who didn't have a care in the world. I worked the canneries when I needed cash but mostly just partied. So I am not much help with the amenities.

Amenities...Hmm.
Well the theatre burned down I think about 20 years ago and never got replaced but with todays satellite stuff who needs it?
I'm sure there's a hospital but don't know the details of size.
A little skinny on dining but the last few years have improved.
A pretty good hardware/sporting goods store that has a decent supply of ammo, guns, fishing stuff.
The Scandia House hotel is the best place in town to stay plus they rent cars and better yet they rent boats.
You can go right out in front and catch salmon.
I go there at least once a year for work and stay about 5 days at a time. Been doing it for about 20 years throughout S.E.
Prettiest ladies I've seen in AK seem to be in Petersburg. (JMO)

Man those bring back memories. I only survived 6 months there because I hooked up with a tall blonde norwegian who had a rich daddy. Lots of millionaires on that little island.

One weekend my buddies and I got "free" rooms at the Scandia House. We knew the gal that worked the night shift. We treated that place like an '80's hairband out of control. The owners showed up and ran us out of there. Crazy times.

I seem to recall a couple good bars and pretty good pizza at that place on the water.

Regarding the ferry I don't know the schedule but Alaska State ferries has a web site with fares and schedules.
The jet from the south comes in the morning and the soutbound leaves in the afternoon.
It's on the milk run.

I can't imagine anything bad about living in Soldatna. SE Alaska is heaven on earth.

Soldotna? You got him on the Kenai Peninsula now.
Not a bad thing. Just a ways from S.E.

Metlakatla and Hydaburg are nice places, though Craig would probably be my 1st choice followed closely by Sitka.

6 months in the dark, you have to be a bit off to live in Alaska so you might as well pick Yakutat.
Yakutat has some of the strangest people around. It is always a soap opera and everyone knows everyone elses business just like any other small town.
Oh, and no one wants to work!

Settle where your income will be best.
You ain't gonna do much hunting or fishing in Alaska without cold hard cash.
Things like fly out trips cost bucks.
Friends of mine moved up out of high school thinking they were going to set the place on fire with the outdoor activities.
One moved to Eagle River the other to Soldotna.
They were rudely awakened by the costs of hunting & fishing.
Every trip was like an out of state trip down here.

My bad - pretty green when it comes to AK. I have only had the chance to get up there once. Spent a week on the peninsula but it sounds like I will have to check out the "SE" next time.
