The State of Virginia is like 90% NRA members. Capital criminal cases move a bit faster there. OK, there, I said something positive about the NRA.

And Virginia is not in the 9th Circuit, so no appeal can be filed there. It's in the DC Circuit, the 10th I think it is, and it's rather conservative. Besides, the SCOTUS has already taken a look at it yesterday and this morning, and while three had some question, it doesn't look like anybody's going to block the execution.

I watched one of those. Most disturbing if I do say so myself.

I've had the unfortunate experiences of seeing people die a couple of times, once in my arms...I have no interest in going out to see it on purpose, ever, even in a movie...and I sincerely hope I never see it again. It changes a man in a way that I would have preferred to have never discovered.

P.S. I'm talking about violent and sudden death...not attending a friend or family member who's dying in a hospital or of old age...I don't like that, either, but will certainly go out of my way to be there if they want me to be.

The benefit of capital punishment is that it's the only sure cure to recidivism. It serves as society's symbolic gesture of self cleansing as well. The downsides are the occasional execution of innocents and cost, with the former being my only real concern. There's no way to live that down. In the present case, the odds of error appear exceedingly remote; now if it occurred in Texas, Indiana, or Illinois, that could be cause for concern.
