As the father, son, brother, nephew of Vets in my family, being named for an Uncle that died in the landing at Palau, and after losing two close friends to Agent Orange related cancers, I thought Jimmy Cliff's ode to Viet Nam was appropriate for today. the statement at the beginning sums up my feelings about war. I do feel privileged to have had the opportunity to serve so no one owes me any thanks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OChrbIR6oHs&feature=related

It ain't about what's owed. It's about what's felt. Thanks!

Well, owed it or not, you're going to get it anyway...thank you for your service, and thanks to anyone else who has served, whether it be stateside, overseas, or in active combat. Fish on... Todd

I served from 1967-1971 USMC. It was an honor to do so.
I have few regrets.
I hope we support the troops who are currently in harms way in a timely manner so they all can come home safely.
Thanks to those who have served or are about to.

I visited the Vietnam War Mamorial for the first time this last summer. Easily the most powerful and emotional place I've been to in my life!
Thanks to all Vets past, present and future!!!

I went to D.C. last year and took about a zillion pics...one of these days I should put together a post with a few...the memorials there are incredible, hard not to be moved when you stand next to them.
Fish on...

Thanks for the good wishes. I met my son and one of his Army buddies for lunch at Mamacita's in Belltown. Big props to them for free lunch for Vets on Veteran's Day. A replica of the Viet Nam memorial made a trip thru Kitsap a few years ago. They did a good job of making a smaller size replica and it's worth seeing even if you can't take a trip to DC. The memorial to Washington's servicemen that paid the ultimate price on the south side of Benaroyaq Hall n Seattle is worth taking alook at also. I stopped there yesterday to pay respects to my Uncle and three friends.

"Thanks" falls pretty well short of what I, we, this country, owe the folks that have served and continue to serve to protect our freedom and ways of life.
In a lot of ways, I am just now beginning to see how insulated most Americans are from what it means to serve and have your life put on the line for the sake of another, for the good of all. I have recently had the chance to meet some truly remarkable vets and have been moved by these interactions more than I can say.
On the lighter side, I am currently working with a former marine. In honor of the 234th birthday of the marine corps (11/10) and veterans day, he talked me into splitting a bottle of Jim Beam and doing 234 push-ups.
Everyone shows respect in their own way I guess.
Thanks to those that have given their all so that others may live.

Worked on A7's with VA 215 on the Enterprise, and A4's with VA 164 on the Hancock. Visited nearly every in country base that had a runway big enough to land a jet. Last cruise I was on the beach detachment and spent 5 months in the PI.

"I am currently working with a former marine"
Hey ColeyG - There are no former Marines. Once a Marine always a Marine. My Dad was a Marine in WW2. I worked for a Marine and we had an office party every Marine birthday. I never failed to remind them that the Marines were part of the Navy. Marines that had spit and polish duty on bigger vessels we called Seagoing bellhops. (not always to their faces!) A Marine handed me my first doob in a bar in DaNang.
freespool - I was back home when the Big 'E' had the fire. Few things worse than a fire onboard a ship. So, you're another member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht.

Worked as a flight deck trouble shooter out of the Avionics branch. On Yankee Station we mostly flew Ho Chi Min Highway Patrol missions, Dixie Station was close air support for the ground pounders. Hi Phong harbor was our primary target up North, but we flew anti SAM sight and Wild Weasel missions as well.

I was with the Marine Corps Air Wing. VFMA-531, VMA-214 and VMFA 323. I worked mostly on F-4's and A-4's. Hearing the stories above brought back a few memories. I lost good friends over there. It's because of them I feel I have to earn the life I live...for them!
I sincerely appreciate our vets. I had an opportunity to sit on oral boards when they came through our hiring process. I was always impressed with their deameanor and committment. Several of them got the nod and have worked out well. Some of them were even Navy vets. I always loved to give them a hard time...in jest of course.
Freespool - What's a twidget? I learned about them in my "A" school in NATTC Memphis.
