what? you guys have never seen a chinoho? Very common down south. They run with the steelhooks as well, who knows whats behind the woodpile over there on that damn Trask....

Dude I can't tell. Ask Lund, he knows more about the run timing on the Trask than anyone here. I'm not sure about the trask but I do know the Wilson recieves very late salmon (closed for retention). I have caught mint bright chinook as late as February on the wilson.

How do these two compare now? (Nice to see Stam's hog again!)

Compare the mandibles on those fish...the salmon in the second pic is considerably smaller, and the mandible is twice as big...also note how short the anal fin is compared to Stam's fish.

Fish on...

Those rivers do get winter kings into February but there isn't a single characteristic that screams king with the fish pictured... The shoulders on those fall and winter kings on those coastal rivers can't be mistaken...

I'm curious as to what Lund calls it as well, he's handled more fish than 50% of the people on this board collectively have in their lifetime.

White gums.

Anal fin is pointed like a Steelie.

Anal fin only looks short because it is not fully extended.

I vote STEELHEAD.

if this is a true crossbred fish it should be a hybred... meaning it should not have a desire to return from the salt.. if this was possible we should have seen many of these crossbred fish.

still a steelhead based on characteristics.

It's an early spring chinark.
'taint no steelie.

*might* be a coho, but doubtful.

Hatchery springer.

OK, OK looking at it for the 10th time, I'm wrong it's not a steelhead.....

I think you're witnessing the earliest spring chinook that I've heard of. Parker called it for what it is, Curt and Todd had it right for Chinook from the beginning...

Good call guys!

Does look very similar...

based on the anal fin the recent pic is a springer no doudt. the fish in question has a squared anal fin.

Trask river spring chinook look like footballs. I've seen plenty of big hen steelhead that came from the Trask and they all looked a lot like that one. Besides what's more likely this time of year...coho, chinook or WINTER STEELHEAD!

Thank god Sol Duc's whale tail is back. . .I was getting worried it was gone.. .

First thought was king based on the head structure and eyeball, but everything else (even with the shower of scales which I bet were induced with the kid wrestling the fish for the pic) suggests to me this is a steelhead. I think we're getting screwed up by the oblique angle the fish is held relative to the camera.

Pretty shiney fish though regardless,
