There's a lot of music fans here like me. I still buy vinyl but not like Paul Mawhinney. He has the largest collection in the world and it's for sale. Check out this vid:

Thats kinda sad that nobody will buy such a historic collection. Worth 50 mill and he only asking for 3 mill with no serious offers. I wonder if he putting some weird stipulations on the purchase? There are some rich ass people in this country who will drop 3 mill on something less valuable. Why dont they want this? Maybe he could donate it to the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

For historical purposes I hope this collection finds it's way into the hands of a museaum or someone who will preserve it. I love vinyl. I can't listen to Physical Graffiti on CD,or Floyd Animals,or The Stones Let it Bleed. That's an insane amount of music. I have like 1000 records and cds and now I want to go buy more. Not for 3 mil though lol

That amount of vinyl in one collection is over the top. Hope someone will step up to the plate, preferably a museum or another collecter. I am sure he has a stipulation that whomever buys it wil keep the collection intact and not part it out.

I am currently working on digitizing my vinyl and making CD's. Fortunatly I dont have quite a million records. Cd's dont sound as good but there are lots of advantages. I will keep my vinyl and when I can sit down and really listen I will play the vinyl. For casual listening or in the car a CD will be OK. I have a good turntable but everytime a record is played is does cause a bit of damage to the record.

CDs don't sound as good as vinyl? How do you figure that?

I had a high quality turntable and receiver, and there was no way you could eliminate all hiss when playing a vinyl record.

To me a CD sounds a little too bright and does not have the dynamics, the highs and lows or fullness of the sound a quality record in great condition has that is played on quality equipment. Your right that you will never get rid of all the hiss on a record. Watch the video Chuck E mentioned in the first post.

What the collector says in the vid about the cds having the highs and lows removed and the recording compressed bfore putting on the cd is true. To me, it's as bad as using pitch correction software to get the singer in sync with the instrumental track the engineers are laying the vocal track over. The pops and hisses can be compensated for without removing the highs and lows. There's a reggae site from the UK that a lot of engineers, producers, sound system owners, djs and players post on and this the opinion of the pros from that site.
All that said, to be honest, after listening to music for the last 50 years I probably couldn't tell the difference if pressed but I'm still not giving up on vinyl as I have three turntables now - one for my wife and two with the dj set up I bought at a Sheriff's auction that I use when I play tunes for parties and other get togethers.

I kinda like the hiss and pop of an old record. It takes me back to when I was a kid and my mom used to put on old santana records with the headphones on the hi fi smile
