I've always wanted state taxes based upon years of residency. Get those F'ing California newbies to foot the bill. No reason they should have the immediate benefit of my many decades of taxes.

I have the atypical S.F. attitude... Does the typical S.F. attitude get a reduced rate? Negative, Ghost Rider. You're still a Californian.

... just remember that the U.S. has one of the lowest alcohol taxes in the developed world by a longshot, if not the lowest. Is that why Duty Free is so attractive?

Doesn't California have some type of property tax freeze that freezes the value they tax to the purchase price?
Not exactly, this measure, called "Proposition 13", had some interesting pieces in it... * Taxes capped at MAXIMUM of 1% of assessed value (which was a big drop for many folks) * Assessment can only increase a maximum of 2% a year--so long as the property isn't sold. This was designed (or marketed) as a way to ensure people weren't taxed out of their homes. The side effect, in the 30 years that it's been in place, is that people who are in their homes for all 30 of those years have extremely low (well below market) assessed values--because california real-estate has gone up considerably more than 60% in value in the last 30 years. It's GREAT for the longtime residents, and puts a ton of the burden on first time home buyers and folks moving into the state. Sorta like the suggestion above to set tax rates based on years of residency.
