The National Marine Fisheries Service says five or six sea lions have been shot to death near Seattle.
The dead sea lions that drifted to shore on West Seattle this past week include at least one Steller sea lion, a species listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act. The rest were the small, more common California sea lions.

Brian Gorman of the fisheries service says it is illegal in most, but not all, cases to shoot any kind of sea lion. But he says at least one is found dead near Seattle each year.

The West Seattle Blog first reported the sea lion deaths. West Seattle is on the Peninsula across Elliott Bay from West Seattle.

Gorman says five shooting deaths in one year is highly unusual. An investigation has begun. Federal officials are unsure what kind of weapon was used to kill the animals, and whether the sea lions were killed by one or more rifle.

Sounds to me like the weapon was a rifle. Hard to find good reporters I guess.

Read that the Eastern Pacific Stellar Sea Lions may be de-listed from the ESA which, if it occurs, will be hugely significant in dealing with Stellars targeting over-sized sturgeon on the CR. May need to move up to the .50 BMG.

I read that those particular sea lions actually died from causes NOT related to any illegal firearms use and that it was mis reported in the first place.

That is true Rick. Did not stop them from blaming anglers last year either. The more it gets talked about, the worse we look.

Oh how quickly we forget.

If my memory does not fail me Twus about a year or two ago the same thing occured. Why I do not know. What I do know is that some people we love to hate have the right to harvest these beasts. And sometimes the harvest gets away in the current and well we can't find them in the inversion fog of the morning dawn. In the end the target harvest may get away and land on the beach causing disarray. Larry B I think you hit the nail on the head. And good ritance to these opposing beasts that bark and roar and disrupt our lore. While there are beasts who perish, we all know more will return and to those with the skill and opportuity of hunting such animal, may you continue to be guided toward your target and may your target recieve a swift blow eliminating opposition to our end goal.

Spending millions on studies, re location programs, and ending up with the same results is stupid!! I'm sure there was a reason.....

I guess the shooter could claim it was ceremonial. That seems to work around here.
