I'm no paranoid whackjob who thinks the economy is going to collapse overnight, with martial law in place, and as a result I need to hoards a ton of supplies in my house to weather the storm. Boy it seems there are alot of paranoid-delusional folks out there right now.

SHTF=I do think the possibility is high that a natural disaster that could disrupt services for an extended period of time. #1 being a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, Ranier popping it's top, etc....

As a result I have been slowly growing my supplies to make sure I have the big 3 covered for my familiy in the event we need it. Last piece of the puzzle was water, and I thought I would share a pretty cool system I discovered recenty and just purchased.

I've been looking into the Katadyn purification systems for a while, but they are really spendy. I have a smaller MSR filter that will do up to about 300 gallons, but wanted a filter system that would work for 6-8 months if needed.

Enter 'Just Water' http://shop.monolithic.com/products/just-water-ceramic-drip-filter

I'll receive mine Thursday and plan to set up the system this weekend, then store it.
Looks like a very effective, economical filtration method in case any of you are looking for something similar.

Just buy the ceramic filter, sock, and spigot, then pick up a couple clean new buckets, and your set for under 50 bucks.

I have been working on our emergency ration plans for a while now. I have a Google Map made out with several Mormon homes within walking distance. And I got a wheelbarrow.

For water I have a huge pool in the backyard.

OH! I love SHTF threads!

For water, the best set up would be a well with wind and/or solar driven pump system.

The reasons are:

1.no new filters made, forever.
2 sustainability
3 crop irrigation
4 independence from municipal systems

Rain barrels & downspouts can be ghetto-filtered by overlapping screens and layers of lump charcoal & pea gravel It works even better if you build an underground cistern that the downspouts connect to.

If the government does truly fall, the utilities will be the first to go as soon as employees realize that they wont be getting paid anymore and what money they were paid in is useless.

If the SHTF really, the inner cities & close-in 'burbs are going to turn into warzones a la post-Katrina, mostly from people shooting each other over cans of creamed spinach down at the local Safeway.

We have 3 contingency plans for SHTF:
2 short term and 1 long term

Head to the in-law's farm.
Load up the camper and head for the hills

or

Help ourselves to a large sail boat down at the local marina and GTFO of dodge.

LOL rofl

I have some Mormon Relatives.

When the 'end days' come I expect to see caravans of minivans with LDS stickers on the back to be heading east on I-84 toward SLC. I haven't read all of it, but there's something in the Book o' Mormon that says something about forming a Mormon army.

Those SOB's actually used to have one too until the US Army showed up and put a stop to it.

I have a strong feeling that if the US Gubmit takes a schit, the Government of the State of Utah will still be going on quite strong and there will be another Mountain Meadows Massacre someday.

Boiling is a major PITA. and tablets dont clean water, just make it safe for Consumption. If you don't mind the taste of duck shizz pond water, have at it.

Raiders and pillagers will quickly find themselves looking for plan B after a few rounds whizz by.

hope for the best, prepare for the worst...

I always try to keep a well stocked pantry and fridge, have candles, flashlights, batteries, camping gear, ammo and other provisions well stocked if for no other reason but to avoid the calamity of a grocery store during a long winter storm (like the east coast has this year) or natural disaster.

I must admit, I do consider the whole "Red Dawn" thing now and then but I have learned to set the firearm down and leave the bathtub for at least an hour a day.

First order of business is back the truck up to the liquor store.
Second order of business is to open a private liquor store. Can trade for just about anything while the still is producing it's first batches.
Third order of business is to start building my harem.
Remind self that while whomever is fishing in "my spot" to go pee in their water supply.

Set on water supply. One year round creek and a seasonal creek within 100 yards.

Ammo, good to go. 126 yards to the front gate, fortified shooting positions, done.

Food, good to go.

Call before you come over.

If the world goes to sh!t in a handbasket, I am gonna barracade myself in Fox's with a case of .45 acp's, two cases of 5.56 and a couple cases of Trojans. I would much rather consider this a fantasy than SHTF.

I made the decision years ago that I wanted to get away from the city just didn't think I would be seriously planning this soon. With the way things are I am speeding up my plans and hope to move this year. If we decide to build I will put in some sort of renewable energy so we can be somewhat self sufficient. Living somewhere where you can provide for yourself without depending on a grocery store will make surviving another Great Depression easier. Hopefully it never happens but history shows that it can.

Plan B, just keep shooting and moving . .. . .

So, you've got water. Do you have a safe heat source for warmth, cooking, bathing?

Do you have good medical reference literature, a well inventoried pelican case, and some CERT training?

Do you have a quality emergency radio, up to and including scanners, Ham, etc.?

Do you have enough dried and canned food to last your family at least three months?

How about a couple deep cycle batts, inverter, and an LED lighting system for the hallway?

Sprouting seeds, and multi vitamins?

Cases of batteries, extra headlamps, light sticks, lighters, blankets, sheets, towels, paper plates and plastic forks/knives?

We had a trial run during our week long power outage and did great. It was a good time to rotate.

If disaster strikes, and not civil unrest, you'll want to have extras to give to your unprepared or unlucky friends, family and neighbors, even if its through a third party organization like your church or red cross. That way your redistributionist neighbors won't point and yell "HOARDER!!", when you're really just well prepared well ahead of time. Not to mention it might beat inflation to buy 1,000 rolls of mountain money.

Better yet, organize your street to make sure you win the Least Traumatized award.

You could also get plate carriers, PASGT, NVD, M14 and a couple motorolas and 11 friends.

You'll probably get conniptions, but check out survivalblog.com for some excellent prepper advice.

Main reason I bought this place was its artesian well, so water is the least of my worries. Staying up all night for days on end to shoot you government-dependant types worries me, however. I need my sleep. wink

I just finished cleaning and oiling my SHTF survival kit. Mine's manufactured by Colt, model M4 smile

Long guns should be considered an essential part of any survival planning process and gear kit. Short guns are good for defense, but being able to reach out and touch someone shouldn't be left for AT&T customers. Something in the tried and true category of a Rem 870 would be a good addition as well.

Water also comes in handy.

Andy,

Being well armed and having a gun with a SHTF setting isn't enough to prevent being over run. You only delay it. You'll need allies. I'll call first.

Aunty,
I like the idea of the gaurds at the bridge, I'd take my turn at watch. A geny and some lights would be helpfull as well. The people on the point are in the SHTF planning stage right now. The whole island could ban together. You would only have to worry about the marine mauraders.....

McCleary power was shut down at midnight tonight for 15 hours. The boys and I broke out our gear for an "off the grid" test for the next few hours. McCleary is an arned camp, with additional LEO support while they upgrade our entire substation. The boys find it fun.

We'll ssee how we did. 15 hours should be easy. We'll retool from there.

No schit. Prolly the bleakest SHTF picture ever painted. Haven't seen the talking moving picture show, but don't think I needs to.

If real lifes got like that, I'd opt for the bullet. Easy call.
