Mainstream 'Rock' has taken a turn for the worse IMO. The great grunge/alternative bands from the 90's are a distant memory. It seemed like there was a time when you could hear decent new music on the radio every month or so.

Last summer Dinosaur Jr. put out a decent classic rock album. I listened to it all summer, and still on my workout I-pod.

But mostly I haven't heard much worth buying lately, but I'm ready to have my eyes opened.

Listening to a lot of Junior Kimbrough, Band of Horses and underground rap lately.

Junior

Great Seattle based rap - Blue Scholars.

I here you on the Tom Petty. For me it is Nirvana. Not that I hate Nirvana, used to like them. Problem is, it is played all the freakin' time down here!

I have heard a few cool songs but I do not know the artists.... hoping someone can stir something up through this thread....

Best way to find out what's going on is to hit pubs & clubs and hear travelling acts. Hit The Tractor Tavern once in awhile.

I swear, the Bush years turned out to be even more culturally barren than The Reagan years.

The 80's were only slightly better than the 70's, America wise. At least the 70's had Punk Rock and the CBGB scene that actually did more to influence modern music than anything before.

I detect a pattern here:

The Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I & II all were disastrous for the musical arts.

The conclusion is Conservativism is the arch-enemy of intellectual development and artistic expression.

some of the stuff out of europe is pretty good. turbonegro, the hellacopters, TSOOL are a few.

the biggest enemy of rock right now is the godawful overproduction. i don't want to hear someone's voice filtered through autotune with a faux string section in the background.

Turbonegro is pretty awesome, saw them a few years ago and they kill it live. I am not sure if they are still going though, Euroboy (their guitarist) just did a record that is absolutely horrible.

Glassjaw, Deftones, Strungout, Isis, Dredg. All of these bands have been around for quite a while and each have their own twist. You can check em out by going to their myspace pages and checking out their playlists or going to their albums on there and listen to all of them for free. Glassjaw's album 'everything you wanted to know about silence" is awesome. Dredg's album "live at the Filmore" is awesome. Strungout "live in a dive" is awesome. Deftones' "Around the Fur" is a gem but any of their albums are awesome. Isis is new to me so check it out and see if you lime it. Have fun

OK-- Pandora people...

Check out Alt Country. Honestly I think the schit's not bad.

Makes me think that modern country and modern rock have changed places, except the dumbass confederate accents.

Because when I've channel surfed past CMT or TNN or whatever that hillbilly hick-ass schitkicker channel is, those hose-bag sheep-fawkers look more like Flock of Seagulls - Depeche Mode groupies than what Rock musicians do these days. "Rock" Musicians are wearing jeans, snap-buttton shirts and playing steel guitar while those NASCAR bands are showing up in tights and hairspray.

I guess that's par for the course in Red State America where lil boys and livestock are fair game.

To answer your question yes there are. I am into heavier bands like Mastodon and High on Fire, bith are new,and both are as good as anything I've ever been into. There are some good things coming up concert wise, and there are a group of friends and I who have been enjoying a resurgence of interesting heavy metal acts(not glam metal like Cinderella).

I saw a 4 band show at a little club last night and all the bands were entertaining, the last one being a band called Shrinebuilder with Wino from St Vitus on lead guitar,Scott Kelly of Neurosis on rhythm,Al Cisneros of Sleep on bass, and Dale from the Melvins on drums. It was as good as anything I have ever seen. In fact it was Epic!

Down is another great band with Phil from Pantera on vocals,Pepper from COC and Kirk from Crowbar guitars, and Jimmy Bower on drums from Eye Hate God,they are freakin great, and are coming out with a new album.

Soundgarden is reuniting for a tour.

I thought the Darkness was a lot of fun. If you are looking to the radio to find good music or MTV you will never find it. Go to Youtube,or better yet,a record store.

Now as for Rock, you are right,it is pretty well dominated by OLD hasbeen rockers charging way too much to see them live and there is a lack of musicianship. But you said Cinderella so maybe Chickenfoot will get you off. Not I.
