I'm with you there Marz. If my kids ask me an adult question, they will get an honest adult answer. I'd rather they hear it from me.

That being said there are also some things that just aren't appropriate for 6yr olds. Encouraging them to act out scenes of Scarface is one of those IMO.

This just in from TMZ:

" Elementary School 'Scarface' -- It Ain't Real
Posted Mar 30th 2010 4:50AM by TMZ Staff

That hysterical (or horrifying) version of "Scarface" making the rounds with grade school kids playing all the parts and spewing the f-word..."fudge" -- yeah, it's not an actual school play.

Instead, it's the work of director Marc Klasfeld and Rockhard Films who did the videos for Lady Gaga's "Pokerface" and Adam Lambert's "For Your Entertainment." It was produced in L.A. within the last few weeks and the audience members were a mix of cast family members, colleagues and friends.

As for Lil' Tony and his co-stars, they were selected through a casting agent known for finding child actor look-alikes for adult stars.

The fake scar was a nice touch."

Few, they were not real children, so it's okay.........FAIL!!

Killing, sex and drugs should only be encouraged if Shakespeare penned the plot.

Besides, Scarface was just a modernized version of an old film about bootleggers.

When those kids are grown up, and have finally seen Scarface, and watch that old movie of themselves, they are going to think it's hilarious.

YGTBFKM right?

So I take it you don't have kids then.

Yes I do have kids. One that scores in the nationwide top percentile.
She has more stamps on her passport than you have synapses, evidently. Do you even have a passport?

You really think a 6 year old is going to know dick about a 30 year old movie???

Then you're dumber than a 5th grader.

Do you really think a 6 year old is going to make the connexion between popcorn and peruvian flake? A super soaker and an M16A1?
[censored] heads like you are why America's youth are a bunch of sheltered, doughy, pussy ass shut-ins that end up with diabetes and morbid obesity by age 12.

Congratulations,.....really.

Although, before you go patting yourself on the back for taking your kid to foreign countries and plastering a "father of the year" bumpersticker to your Yugo I should point out to you just how stoopid you sound.

So your kid scores in the top percentile but isn't smart enough to understand "dick" about a 30yr old movie? Interesting.

She's been to several places (which apparently is a measure of intelligence) but can't make the connection between popcorn and blow? Especially when used in this context?

Might be time to go back to the drawing board.

Look, you've got every right to expose your kid to things like this, to a degree. Where I have a problem is where this is making light of drug use, violence, and murder in the form of a child's school play. If you don't think that confuses the chit out of a 6yr old then you are completely dilluted.

Like it or not it's your responsibility as a parent to shelter your kids from things they are too young to understand. Do you let your 6yr old watch porn?

If so, hey, it's your prerogative. Just don't be suprised if the state controlled child protective gestapo shows up at your house one day to make sure you are "fit".

And, yes,......I have a passport. Thanks for your concern.

Soooo.... Avatar (with people getting ripped apart) and Star Wars (kindly old grandfather figure getting hacked w/ lightsaber) are OK for little kids to watch and then act out with toy guns...because...

Why??

I'm waiting for your logic on this one.

Might be awhile. Maybe some of your friends can help you out.

Another thing is, Scarface is set in the social context of the early 1980's, which is before college-age kids these days were even born.

If you replace the coke in Scarface with popcorn, the guns with supersoakers, the adults with kids...

Why do I even bother??

Quote:
A parody (pronounced /ˈpærədiː/; also called send-up or spoof), in contemporary usage, is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation. As the literary theorist Linda Hutcheon (2000: 7) puts it, "parody … is imitation, not always at the expense of the parodied text." Another critic, Simon Dentith (2000: 9), defines parody as "any cultural practice which provides a relatively polemical allusive imitation of another cultural production or practice." Often, the most satisfying element of a good parody is seeing others mistake it for the genuine article.
Parody may be found in art or culture, including literature, music (although "parody" in music has an earlier, somewhat different meaning than for other art forms), and cinema. Parodies are sometimes colloquially referred to as spoofs or lampoons.

I didn't use those examples and say they were OK, you did. In fact I think both of those are excellent examples of how kids are taught about violence.

It depends on the parent if those are OK to watch for a 6yr old. They both use movie violence in a way that makes a 6yr old think that the consequences of violent actions are superficial. They're fake, not real.

If you really want your kid to have a healthy respect for guns and violence then take him/her out into the woods with you the next time you blow a hole in an elk with a 7mm mag. Show your kid what the power of firearm will do when pointing out the exit wound. Make sure they understand that something you pointed a weapon at is now dead.

Since I've taught my kid to have this respect for violence in the real world I am confident about him knowing the difference between what is real and what appears in movies he may see.

Not sure what Scarface being set in the 80's has to do with this conversation. Like I said, my problem lies within the glorification of the lifestyle of the fictional Tony Montana. IMO it's not something that should be made light of in the context of explaining it to 6yr olds. Raise your child however you like.

Glad to see it wasn't sanctioned by a school.

1. I said I hoped it was fake, glad it was.

2. Avatar and Star Wars.. I have a 6 and 4 years old, and we're still happily watching cartoons, not either of these (and clearly not Scarface). I am often mystified why parents push their kids to grow up so fast these days. There's no prize for being first to see PG-13 or R rated movies.. Full disclosure: my kids know what Star Wars is (lego star wars video game with friends), full of lego-block shattering light saber battles.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

True, dat.
