I'd heard of it but always kind of thought it was a joke (I even thought Parker proved it!) until this weekend when we recruited an islander to come pull our pots with us. He proceded to clean a fresh one and eat it, then offered me one. Perhaps it was the alcohol talkin' but I was game to try one.

Oh my God what is good. Incredible sweet and delicate. I was told the coonstripes are even better.

And, no, I didn't get any sort of sickness or digestive problems from it.

I'd highly recommend it...they were awesome raw!

'Course, the big pot of cooked ones were pretty good, too smile

Fish on...

They are delicious raw. Same prawn as amaeibi is made from in sushi joints from what I understand. You can deep fat fry the heads and eat them like potato chips too! Yummy

The eggs are the best though they never have them this time of year. We bought from the boats in S.E. and the row was great. Just peel it off and eat. Very sweet with a little salty flavor mixed in....and each egg pops in the mouth. If you have not tried it you should. It is nothing like you think it would be.......much better.

Wasabi and pickled ginger are standard equipment on all shrimp trips.

BTW... Geoduck mantles sliced thin are also excellent sushi!

Tasty, I'm sure, but cooked for me too. No desire to play russian roulette with intestinal parasites.

Ama-ebi.... literally translated "sweet shrimp".

Nothing could be more accurate to describe this delicacy on the sushi menu.

The good sushi joints pluck the critter LIVE from a tank, separate the tail meat, then serve the butterflied tails as nigiri. Like Neal said, the heads are then coated and deep fired til absolutely crisp.... legs, gills, antennae and all. INCREDIBLE!

I think you're more likely to get sick from the nasty-ass catfood concoction most folks mix together for bait than any native parasites in the shrimp.

I'd think to avoid any off-taste in the heads, a guy should let em sit in aerated saltwater for a while to digest any of that nastiness still trapped in their mouth/esophagus/stomach.

lots of PS spots are shipped live to Ca. sushi restaurants for what doc described.
it's a shame to over cook a spot.

If it's OK to eat raw oysters, it might make sense to eat raw shrimp. I've never had shrimp from a freshly pulled pot.

Then again, the entire concept of cooking seafood is to avoid over-cooking at all costs. It seems like we're trying to prepare all of it as close to raw as we can, getting it hot all the way through. Given that, I'd try raw shrimp.

Another fresh raw treat from our NW waters is lingcod cheeks. Except when there's a wire tag in one.

I love sushi, as long as they cook it right..... I guess it is the old farm kid in me, but I just don't enjoy raw fish, rare steaks, prime rib that is barely warm in the middle. To each his own

Went geoducking with Charlie last year.
Asked him how to prepare it....the shashimi sypon was awesome! I had dinner plans the next three nights so I brought it to a team cookout for the boy's track team that evening. I was surprised the boys ate all of it in a few minutes. I was lucky to get a few pieces.

Oh sorry, I was either having flashbacks to my college years, or the last time I ate a raw shrimp.
