Looked at some interesting tag data today with the help of a bio, about 70% of these fish are coming from Idaho and almost all were released in 2008..

SBD do you mean the fish that have been caught and checked by the fish checker, or the ones that are passing the dam?

date PIT-tagged fish Adults at Bonneville

04/20/10 340 9014
04/21/10 386 11697
04/22/10 250 7407
04/23/10 254 6619
04/24/10 203 5773

Here's a sample of Tagged fish crossing Bonneville, its loose and the Bio I was working with said don't quote him but about 3.5% of the fish crossing the dam are Pit Tagged..Of these 70% were from Idaho and almost all are 2 year ocean fish which would explain the cookie cutter look to the hatchery fish.

Of the dozen or so fish I've taken from other tribs on the CR, they all seem to be that cookie cutter 9-12 pound fish...

Where's all the 3 and 4 salt fish?

Great question but I'm getting the feeling that secret area they go to isn't as far away as we thought..Which would explain why springers don't really show up in BC and Alaska data..

It just doesn't make a ton of sense to me why salmon are getting smaller and smaller. Is it a genetic issue?

Go 5 hours south to the Umpqua and you see your average fish 1.5 times larger than that of the CR... Even the Oregon coast has larger fish.........

Not sure if there getting smaller or just returning sooner..Big Jack return of 1 year olds last year and this year primarily 2 year olds and I'm assuming the Jack counts will pick up soon..That hatchery feed must be way better than anything they can find in the wild so lets beat fins back.. help

I believe it's one or two salt you're refering to.

Age of fish would be three and four IMHO.
The dams have been spilling warmer water for a couple of weeks now. We have roughly 100k for the run peak update.
The catch numbers for the last crc "fact sheet" are still not updated to reflect stock composition?

I believe we will see one more spike. Once we get into May we will also start seeing Summer fish in the mix. Harvest Management went on to mid June to include the Snake River summer run with a similar life history.
Apples to oranges todays numbers are.

Query shows majority of smolts tagged and released from Idaho in 2008..Fact sheet would show composition of all lower river catch which would include lower river tribs something this wouldn't..Again nothing scientific here, just some interesting numbers.

Some wild did show up as 2007 releases and I asked about this and he said they have some small mesh beach seines where they actually go out and tag wild stock smolts...So Keith is right! There are unclipped wild stocks with CWT and Pit Tags..Interesting stuff for us bored information junkies.. beer

You know what's even more interesting and lacking in the science with the system....

They close all the netters out of Tounge Point, Deep River, Blind Slough, etc because they were catching surplus black jaws (upriver fish) in those areas....

Ever wonder how many of these "upriver" fish travel up the willamette a ways before they turn around and head back out to the Big C and work their way upriver?

Ever look at the recent pictures of the fish taken from the willy? I've seen multiple pictures as of recent that are black jaws taken as high as Oregon City..............

I know the summer steelhead that travel up the Columbia will take turns into tribs due to the cooler water and hang for a while, I've caught a ton of "upper columbia" wild fish right during their peak migration in the lower Lewis River but never catch those same wild fish in the mid or upper river.....

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

9073 Yesterday but I'm not sure if the Pit Tag Detectors and the Visual Counters are using the same 24 hour time period. But great news anyway!
