I see Haggen's has Rosario Strait wild caught king salmon for sale. I have never seen them market area 7 fish and where exactly did they come from? What commercial fisheries are open for kings?

Not sure if the Samish Bay commericial opener has happened or not. If not, it is close. Those bay gets hit hard and a lot of fish get pulled out. Kind of a stretch to call those "Rosario Straight" fish but I can see it happening.

I figured they might be from samish, the commercial fishery opened there sunday night. Yes, it is a stretch to call them rosario. I asked the gal behind the counter about it and she said she has no idea. They buy from a supplier and they named them.

From a marketing perspsective it makes a lot of sense to find ways to make chum salmon attractive to consumers. Bright chums are certainly edible, and I guess I'd eat one if I couldn't ever find a chinook, sockeye, or coho.

King salmon from Rosario Strait sounds so much better than Ditch chinook, and it's all part of Area 7 anyway. No point troubling shoppers with the details about sub-areas.

saw some really bright chums sold as "white kings". The hint of purple was a giveaway.

Most consumers like what they are told to like. If they are told the best salmon are ocean caught, they'll buy them. Call a fish wild caught (and it has no adipose) and they think they are doing well.

Back when I was in college, Doc Donaldson told of the time they fed groups of his super trout exactly the same diet, except for dyes. The North Americans said the red fleshed fish tasted better, the northern Europeans preferred the white flesh. There was no difference in the taste, just the appearance.

Just like how Hilltop was renamed Upper Tacoma by the Realtors.
