Might be getting a NEW boat next year for the sound and lakes. So I guess what it comes down to again is: Welded vs double rivet. I see that the welded Klamath will last forever, BUT the Lund uses heavier duty aluminum and a lifetime warranty BUT is double-riveted and see people selling 10 yr old "leaking" Lunds on Craiglist. Their is about a 1000.00 difference between the two and the Klamath being the more expensive, but again has thinner aluminum. Klamath Link Lund link Hard decisions here.... thank you!

Wooldridge. It's welded. They'll work with you on the set-up you want. I have the Sport Off-Shore. 20' with bracket. Great fishing platform. If you're looking at a 16', I know that you'll find the 17' much more functional. The bracket gives you more deck space. The transom mount costs some deck space, but a smaller package on a trailer. I know guys with both of the 17' models and they'll run them off-shore plus anywhere in the Sound. http://www.wooldridgeboats.com/

If you are trying to do much fishing in the salt I would suggest no smaller than an 18 foot out there to handle everything that might get thrown at you. On a cruddy day in an 18 footer you'll wish you were in a 24'. Klamath makes a really nice boat, like the hull design, but 14' is just too small to be a comfortable all-arounder I would say 16' should be a bare minimum.
Also, save yourself some doh and go used. I am sure you can find just the right boat and save THOUSANDS on a used rigs.

I'd argue for 20' minimum. The wave frequency I've experienced in the Strait is best handled by 20'+. 18' is okay and 16' will get you very wet. The 17' Wooldridge is capable, but the extra 3' makes a lot of difference.
The Sport Off-Shore has a 30 degree bow and 16 degree deadrise. It can be a hard ride. The Super Sport Off-Shore is 40 and 18. It came out the year after I bought my boat. If I had to do it over, I'd have waited a year.....A 115 Yamaha pushes my boat along just fine. The Super with the deeper vee is probably better pushed by a 130 Honda or a 150 Yamaha.
Used hulls are okay, but get them checked before handing over any payment.

Save some bucks and go used with something like this or the next size smaller with a center con. This one looks like a steal. I have never seen it... http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/boa/1986529235.htmlI have a few boats but love to fish out my Bayrunner alone or with my kids. It goes lots of places and takes a pounding but stays dry for the most part. That high bow makes a huge diffrence.

Can't go wrong with the Lund. Never heard of a motor out living a Lund.
Mines 30 years old and doesn't leak a bit. Had to patch some drill holes but that was easy enough. I'm also pretty hard on it both pounding in rough water and running it up on the beach.
Spend some time at the boat launch and you'll see plenty of OLD Lunds.

Neither of those boats would be "what I'd want in the sound". Do yourself a favor....buy big, you'll be glad you did......

Peter,
Nothing wrong with either boat, but your links are for 14' boats, not 16'. Some folks are prejudiced against riveted boats. Perhaps they've never flown in airplanes. I've never seen a welded airplane. The only riveted boats I've heard of that had leaking problems were cheap boats. I've used Lunds for work and leisure for over 30 years and am impressed with their durability. A couple friends have Klamaths and are happy with them. I think they might give a drier ride in the sound. In a Lund, I would not consider a WC model since they came out with the SSV, which I bought. It has a slight vee hull and is a significantly better ride than the WC.
No matter what size boat you buy, people will invariably recommend a bigger boat. Bigger boats are nice, but bigger boats are not an accessory to fishing. Bigger boats take more control than I want to yield. They require more storage space and security, larger motors and operating expense, a larger tow rig, and a crew to help with launch and retrieval.
If you're considering a 14' or 15' boat, you've probably already decided that you don't want the expense or requirements that come with a bigger boat. Obviously a small boat makes you a fair weather boater, and you won't be able to fish in conditions that some of the bigger boats can. My experience is that when the water is that rough, I'm not having the kind of fishing fun that I signed up for anyway, so I'm good with the compromise. Also I like the versitility of my 16' in that I can take one or two others or just go by myself cuz the boat is light and easy to launch and retrieve solo. But small boats can't go fishing during the Perfect Storm.

I'm sorry guys but I did forget to add my preferences: - 90% fly fishing for coho, src and some kings - 90% solo launches and fishing - on a budget so my max spendature would be under 4000.00 - 14-16' length so I can launch in a shallow launch. - already have a 2004 Honda 20hp
Was thinking buying new so I can get lunds lifetime warranty, but if they are known to leak in less than 10yrs like smokercrafts well then I'm kinda hard-pressed.
Thanks for all you help guys!

I've got a Lund WC-14 like in your link. Its a solid, stable boat, that I'd have no problems fishing the sound in. I'd even fish the straits and Columbia in it.
I did fish all those areas in my old 15' Smokercraft. You just have to be more cautious than the guys in bigger boats.
I sold my Smokercraft to buy a bigger boat and regretted it the day it left the driveway. While I do love my 20' Seahawk, there are some days when I'm fishing by myself that messing with the big boat is a hassle. Thats why I bought the Lund.

I have a Lund and never had a problem with it but be careful of "lifetime warranty" and what that covers. Most warranties don't cover normal wear and tear so if you rub a hole in the hull from beaching it 20 times a day I doubt the warranty would cover it. I don't let warranties be the final determination of what I buy because most of the time there are strings attached to the warranties.

You might want to add Gregor or Duroboat to your look at list. I'd opt for a 16' over a 14'.

Given your price range you are limited. With the 20 hp you obviously wont be going clear across the bay. Nor will you be blasting the tops of waves in either boat. Metal will flex and over the years a rivet might leak. You could seal the bottom with a bed liner but I dont know what issues you would create, besides adding weight. You wont be back casting in bad weather, so either boat will probably get the job done. I too would look at Duro and Gregor.

I had a 14' Starcraft riveted boat for 16 years, fished the sound, the Chehalis, the Wynoochee, the Satsop and many lakes in BC...did have 2 leaks........I just drill them out, had order the correct size, got some life window sealer........in 2 minutes I was good to go.......BUT that said, my other 2 boats have been welded.....I like welded!!!!!!!

Here you go, 16' Lund Alaskan (click) . Open floor plan, plenty sturdy but not too heavy. Invest $350 plus 4-5 weekends free time effort, and you will have a functionally like-new boat. Get vinyl deck covering, glue, cheap flotation foam (or pool noodles), hull sealer, wide-head alum rivets & rivet gun, and wire it the way you want. Ensure the hull has not been abused, that trailer rust is not serious, and the new decking plywood is acceptable. Don't pay $1,500 for it... Dont be afraid of a few leaky rivets, you won't sink, easy to fix, easy to seal. Lots of welded 14 Westerner, Klamath and Gregor boats around here with heavily pin-holed hulls due to sitting in salt water. Plenty of welded boats with cracks adjacent to welds, too. Duroboat bench seats are rivetted to the hull. Not many deep 14 used boats selling without motor. The new 14 Klamath is only 64 beam. You need to go to the 15 Klamath to get the wider beam. Lund is wider. Port Angeles has a new delivery of Gregors and a few Duroboats (click) . You will not get a new 15 to 16 Gregor, Lund, or Klamath and trailer for less than $6K. My 1994 16 Lund Rebel tiller is similar to above Alaskan, gets up on plane with a 20hp Johnson, carrying two big guys, crab pots, 10 gal water, etc. I am currently replacing the soft deck, stopping some leaks, replacing water-logged (original) foam; no big deal.

Be honest with yourself...do you plan on owning this boat for the next 20 years? Something tells me that after 4 months of use, you will want something a little bigger AND something with a little more power. If you went out and bought a brand new hull, you will never get your money back.
