Didn't ya'll have a record heat wave down there this year? I noticed the global warming conspiracy theorists were awfully quiet around that time.

Climate Change. Some places get warmer, some places get colder. As long as all the glaciers and ice caps melt, it's gotta be warming up somewhere.

I'm a bit skeptical considering they can't get tomorrows weather about 1/2 the time.
Hank, ya gotta stop making such silly remarks. BTW 2010 is on course to be the warmest in history. But hey as long as we all know evolution is a myth we can get nominated by the tea Party.

Of course, Dave's right. Predicting the weather is pretty nearly a crapshoot most of the time.
That said, I have seen indicators that wise, long-time residents of the area tell me point to a rough winter. For example, I have seen a lot of large cones on the conifers, and the mushroom hunting has been incredible this year. Last year wasn't great for mushrooms, and we had a remarkably mild winter. The year before, the mushrooms were thick (not quite like this year, but fairly abundant), and I'm sure a lot of us remember the winter that followed, where at one point we had snow on the ground in the lowlands for about two weeks straight.
We'll see if any of these predictions hold true, but one thing's for sure: we'll get what we get.

Quick question regarding global warming. Wasn't there a global cooling called the ICE AGE? And wasn't there also a reversal effect of that where the ice has been melting due to incresed greenhouse gases from melting ice? For thousands of years if I'm not mistaken. Lastly, how many of you are scientists?

No need for us to kill off any humans.
The Earth will take care of its own population control.

Dave, SInce you seem only an idiot doesn't beleive in evolution, I ask you, what was the origin of the universe, or of matter. What made something like an ear evolve when, up to the point of being an ear, it served no purpose. All life is extremely complicated, and at the beginning all mutations would have to be slight, leaving me to wonder how an ear or an eye could evolve out of anything, since until it functioned on a small level, it had no benefit. Until it was benefical, it would serve no purpose, but still have to be passed on genetically. If thats the case, do we see non-benefical mutations evolving in any species now? Not real versed in this, but I just find it all hard to understand unless you start with a designer.
Now, how long till KK chimes in about what an idiot I am?

How about hair? What's it's purpose these day's and if needed why don't we have more of it? Or are we slowly losing it as we evolve? Some more than others.

Avid:
You perhaps misunderstand the idea of global warming vs. man made global warming. Of the former there is absolutely no doubt. The latter is still not clear. No doubt the earth has experienced major warming and cooling trends in the past, so why would you doubt us in a major warming trend now? Those ice caps are melting for a reason. I'm no scientist which makes me more likely to believe those who are. I’m not a doctor either, but if the vast majority of doctors made the same diagnosis I would tend to believe them, because I know they are much more qualified in that area than am.
AM: Once again we are in agreement. There is precious little we can do. But that does not make the issue any less real. Nor the need to try to find ways to mitigate the problem, especially for those who live in very low areas such as The Marshall Islands, where the highest ground is les than 20 feet.

1. I don't know. But not fully understanding something does not negate its existance. I don't understand how cell phones work either . . .
2. Many scientist believe that there was a creator and that evolution is a fact. Don't assme I believe there was no creator just because I agree with the vast majority of scientuist who are certain of evolution.

"Many scientist believe that there was a creator and that evolution is a fact."
Many years ago scientist believed the world was flat and that the sun revolved around the earth. The recent theory of dark matter proves we know less than we could ever imagine. It seems that science sometimes is as much about faith as religion yet people go all in on science on feeling and faith in the ability of others with very little education or knowledge to back them up yet shun religion. We need an ESA for Pragmatism.

Dave, The belief that not believing in evolution makes you an idiot is what I disagree with. In my opinion, to be certian of evolution, at where it stands, contradicts the whole notion of sceince. To believe in it, is a different story. My experience is that truely intelligent people will look at all sceince with skeptism, while others look at their belief with certainty. I can understand why a religious person may hold a belief without skeptism, as that is to a certain degree what faith is. But for sceintists to hold a belief with no skeptism, makes theirs one of faith. But faith in what? Their own intelligence? I suppose that's what makes so many of them so mad when some one questions them.

Tom,
Science accepts one theory until a better theory is put forward.
That's why "faith" isn't the correct term to use. It's lack of a better theory, not faith.

I agree with you but that is not how it is being used here. In DV's example abouve he is clearly putting his fatih in people trained in these issue's becasue he does not feel qulaified to make the case. How is that any different than someone turning to "God" for anwers on an issue that is beyond them at that place in time?

Tom:
BTW I love your board name.
I do not have blind faith in all science, but tend to believe that the issue of evolution is pretty well settled. If you choose to believe something else that’s fine with me but the one who hold such a minority belief is more likely to be the one who is operating on faith.
Faith too is fine but it has led an awful lot of people to really strange conclusions, Branch Davidians, Jim Jones’s followers etc. etc.
As for my ability to explain Darwinism, I am not qualified, never claimed to be. Are you qualified to attack it?

DV,
Not at all qualified , I am only qualified to offer my opinion:-) Are you qualified to attack religion? You offer some examples of bad things that come from religion with an implication that they are reasons to be suspect or apply avoidance. A lot of bad things revolve around many areas of our lives, sex, relationships, work, money etc yet we do not abandon our pursuit of knowledge on those topics. I am too pragmatic, I have no fear of where I am going or what road I make take to get there. Everything that will lead to truth and understanding is on the table regardless of societal conventions.
