Point something at me like that and you will likely end up dead. We'll sort the facts out later. Stupid actions win stupid prizes, especially when the police are involved.
I hereby nominate this guy for the Darwin award, since he has successfully removed himself from the gene pool as a result of his own actions.

As officers awaited requested backup units, the man pointed the object at apartments and played with it, causing it to make sounds similar to those of a gun being handled, he said.
He never knew there was a problem. Police snuck down the corridor and shot him," Biele said. "He was a drunk sitting on a stoop fumbling with a hose nozzle."
Cops version was he pointed the (gun) at them, family had a different one.
Shot 8 times, twice with a shotgun? New meaning to the phrase . Over Kill

The link isn't working for me...but I'm going to assume shot by several officers in a very short timeframe. That is probably the safest way to carry out something like that if it must be done...I don't think it meets the description of overkill.

Kudos to the police for doing their job. Kudos to the cops for killing yet another unarmed innocent civilian, just cuz they feel like it. Cops like to kill people, that's why they carry guns and kill people all of the time.

What if it had been a squirt gun and he was playing with his kid who was looking out the window of the building. Or playing laser tag. If they made no attempt to talk to him, how could they know his intention. I can easily see how a freind could have been up in a window and he was playing or teasing him. Seems like a definite over kill. If he was pointing it at the building, he wasn't pointing it at them. I have a hard time seeing how they felt it was immediate threat.
Officers, in my opinion, are often gun happy. Last year I witnessed several of them draw their weapons on a stopped car. The occupants of the car were just sitting there, except for one which apparently was using al phone to call someone to pick up the child in the car. The officers could have moved 10 feet and had a forest backstop. Instead they choose to use a the busy highway as their backstop. If they actually had discharged a weapon there was 90% chance they would have hit a travelling car. So, one can only assume either they were idiots, or they never expected to use them. But, why aim a weapon at someone if you really know you aren't going to use it. In my world, you never point a loaded weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot. Also had neighbor held at gun point because he told them he had a concealed permit and was carrying a weapon. He was stopped for speeding, told them, and then ordered out of the car and handcuffed at gun point. He is a retired master sargent that was a weapons expert and ran the range. As he said, if anyone under his command pointed a weapon at anyone they would face immediate action. You just don't do it. when you do, things like this are bound to happen.

I will always back LEO's if they act responsibly. This incident certainly doesn't qualify, IMO.
Neither does shooting a drunk wood carver with a pocket knife. In that case the promoted concept was that the guy could have attacked the officer. B.S. In the video, one can easily see the drunk can hardly walk.
Neither does stomping on a handcuffed "suspect"'s face (who was NOT the perp, btw).
I don't know who is training the idiots, but it is out of hand. If you are afraid of guns, you shouldn't have one.....badge or not.Returning to this incident: Approaching someone sitting in their back yard fiddling with a hose nozzle, or a gun (suppose he was cleaning his hand gun....that is a legal activity) certainly should require an announcement that there are officers present prior to opening fire.

Must be a big city thing, read something like this and think great one less for the morning commute. I'll stay in the small coastal towns cops aren't shooting anybody and no one's shooting at them. A local policeman friend of mine introduced to my new wife at a superbowl party at the local wateringhole.

Kudos to the police for doing their job. Kudos to the cops for killing yet another unarmed innocent civilian, just cuz they feel like it. Cops like to kill people, that's why they carry guns and kill people all of the time. Now your just baiting people. Not baiting, just stating a fact. Cops kill people. Cops generally kill innocent people. How many cops have actually been fired on and then killed the person who was trying to kill them? Probably not very many. How many people have been killed by cops because they had something in their hand that *looked* like a gun (squirt gun, cell phone, bag of pot, hose nozzle, etc.)? Probably a lot. Cops are trained to kill. There is something inherently wrong about this fact, yet no one ever thinks about it.

Sad indeed, but also sad that almost everyone on here is ready to jump to a conclusion based on a short news story.

"Not baiting, just stating a fact. Cops kill people. Cops generally kill innocent people"
Bull f'ing [censored]. Cops generally do a helluva great job in really, really difficult circumstances. The vast majority of cops have never fired their weapon while on the job, yet many, many times they defuse situations that would become dangerous if they weren't there to intervene.
Just stating facts: Drunks, speeders, and other criminals kill people. Cops succeed in stopping many drunks, speeders, and other criminals before they kill more. And, in the vast majority of cases, they do this without ever drawing a weapon.

"Cops generally do a helluva great job in really, really difficult circumstances."
I couldn't agree more. But when they fk up and someone dies or is beat up who didn't need killing or being brutalized, it's beyond tragic. Especially so when inexcusable action is defended. People should not be the innocent victims of over zealous gun packing thugs.....the consequences are too high.
In the video of the wood carver, for instance, you can hear an eye witness say, "He didn't do anything." The killer/officer's response...."He had a knife."
It is not a long leap to replace "He had a knife" with "He had a sharp pencil"
I don't think we can afford stupid cops. If anything, they need to be thoroughly screened and trained first to de-escalate volatile situations, not crush them with force. Cops have a right to go home safe. So did those who were needlessly killed or roughed up. Cops need to be good examples if they expect respect. And if they don't care if they are respected (not to be confused with feared), they need to be gone. Period.
