Do you agree with the marine general whos says it will hurt troop morale, or do you agree with the other generals who say it's no problem. Either way it's about to change.

It will hurt morale in the short term. ... .it will remind people that we live in the real world and everyone should be equal in the long term. .. The type of "gays" that some are afraid of compromising that combat units will not be volunteering for combat units anyway. As long as they keep the same standards across the board and don't give special exceptions/priveledges, everything should be fine. Or not, who the F@#$K knows, it has been awhile and I have grown up a bit since I was in so my perspective may be a bit skewed.

If the top military commanders don't approve the changes, after Obama signed the law, it still won't take effect according to the story on NPR.

According to the military polls of troops, the majority don't care. Only 35% responded to that poll so that could be taken with a grain of salt. On the other hand, a majority of the troops in combat zones are opposed to the repeal of DADT. Clearly, 65% of the military cared so little, they didn't even complete the survey. But, if the survey was completed by only 35% of the military, and the majority of those indicate they don't care, how do you surmise the majority of all combat troops are opposed?

Combat roles are far different than troops in combat zones. So, then making that distinction, given that only 35% of total troops even bothered to complete the survey, the number of military actually opposed is pretty small, relatively speaking.

I said the 65% that failed to respond didn't care enough about the policy either way to complete the survey, not that they favored repeal. And if 35% did complete the survey, then that is an accurate measure of those concerned enough with the policy to state an opinion, the majority of which favoring appeal.
Combat roles are infantry, artillery, tanker, etc.
Those in a combat zone include the above, plus cooks, supply, admin, finance, MP, truck drivers, signal, etc. The majority of personnel in a combat zone are not combat roles.

Fine gnarley. Everybody in the military loves gays and can't wait for them to serve openly.
End of discussion. Actually, I bet it's just like the great majority of people everywhere in the USA...they honestly just don't give a $hit about something as irrelevant as somebody's sexual orientation. The only time it matters is if you're trying to get into somebody's pants...it would be good to know if you've at least got a shot...otherwise, no one cares. Fish on... Todd

I don't really care if gays serve openly or not, but I think this should have been handled internally by the military, not by passing a bill.

but I think this should have been handled internally by the military, not by passing a bill. It was legislation that prevented gays from serving openly, ergo, it required legislation to end the previous. That's like basic civics, right there. Or do you advocate for the military to disregard the laws Congress imposes on the military? That's called a police state. That really what you want? Maybe you simply don't agree with the military being ran by civilians as outlined in the Constitution? I bet you really miss those days of Germany in the late '30s.

Actually it was a presidential mandate from what I read, which is law, but no a congressional law. Internal Military issues should be delt with by the military in my opinion. I'm not advocating for the military to ignore the law, or a police state. For you to suggest that is just stupid. In a volunteer military, I think they have a right to discriminate if deemed necessary. They do presently with health issues, education etc. By forcing the issue, only for political purposes, opens the door for possibilities, although remote, of vision impaired, mrdd, or any other group that doesn't want to be discriminated against as recruits. I see it as a slippery slope. I'm in no way saying gays shouldn't serve, but I do think the issue should have been handled internally from the start.

I see it as a slippery slope. Interesting insight; homosexuality is akin to a physical impairment. Wow.

I could /would / should answer that except it would be a hijack & limited myself to (1) hijacked thread at a time - currently working on The Rudolph Thread.
So whatcha think about the overturn of "Don't ask - don't tell" ? I don't care either way.

That's not what I said. I said it opens the door to any group who doesn't want to be discriminated against. Gays don't want to be discriminated against any more than any other group. Obviously comprehension isn't your strong suit.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.
