oh man. My buddy's dad had two of them and they came out back to back. He said other than the death of a loved one or the sight of his newborn child, it's the only thing that will make a grown man cry. He saved them and showed us.

Honestly, seeing patients with them pretty often, one told me to drink lots of water and just lightly jump up and down when the pain is bad, coming down hard on your heels. This allows the hydraulic force of the water to push the stone down. The pain is backed up urine swelling urethra. When I had one I tried it and it worked very well.

I have passed 2. Like a really bad tooth ache deep inside that feels like it should get better with curling up into a fetal position but just doesn't get better.

Also, I have taken care of literally hundreds of patients with stones at this point in my career. Fortunately, they usually respond well in the ED to IV fluids and enough narcotic meds IV. Then they either pass "on their own" with plenty of fluids and oral pain meds, or if they are bigger than 6mm the urologist goes in through the willie (not the boat type) and blasts them into smaller pieces or retrieves it directly.

Reader's digest version.

Ouch!

I've passed 2, first was in 2007, Friday afternoon I started feeling pain in my back that wasn't bad at 1st, by about 6pm I was rolling around on the floor in agony and my wife insisted on a trip to the ER. Sat in the ER for almost 2 hours before I finally got to see a doc who diagnosed the stone and said there was another 1 in the other kidney. After getting some really good pain meds I went home and decided not to cancel a Kalama trip I had planned for the following morning. I was fine and even caught a springer out of the 1st hole, about noon things went to hell, the pain med made me sick so not only was I in pain but I was puking my guts out and this is at the Beginners Hole, still had to row down to Modrow which sucked big time. That stone took me 8 days to pass, some days were pain free, others, not so much. On the 6th day I had to fly to Alaska, passed the stone on the morning of the 8th day, right before my guests got on the boat, huge relief.
Second stone was a year ago and I was woke up about 2 in the morning and knew exactly what it was, rolled around on the living room floor in agony for 3 hours then passed that stone. The 2nd stone hurt worse but only lasted 3 hours, If I ever have another 1 I want the 3 hour stone.
Good luck! thumbs

If you are doing it DIY be sure t drink a ton of water. It will help dilate up the ureters and float that thing down the pipe. If it is working the pain will go lower and lower and then disappear, followed a day or so later by pain in little willie as it enters the toilet.

Sincere condolences and best luck.

I haven't been fortunate to deal with kidney stones yet. If it's anything like having a full blown gallbladder attack I think I'd rather jump off a 20ft bridge with nothing but rocks at the bottom. I can't even begin to describe the pain and wouldn't even wish it on my worst enemy... Well maybe...

Get through it Brewer, time is your worst enemy!

I had good insurance and a 4mm stone, doc sent me home with pain meds, said if it was either 4.5 or 5 mm, don't remember which, they could zap it, until then, suck it up and be a man, 8 days later I passed it, Son of a .............!

I'm a stone factory.
I've passed eight and had five large ones blown up via three lithotipsy procedure. The last lithotripsy was two weeks ago.
I felt like I was pissing spawning gravel afterward. By far the most painful physical ailment I've gone through.

Mine was 5mm(3/16) x 10mm(3/8) and the pain will take you to the floor. Tried the water hydro thing-- couldn't find it. Finally on the 3rd hospital trip did the laser thing--- only one way in for the laser and that is through a small natural hole in the body.

Took 3 weeks for them to deal with mine. The laser deal was a trip. I'm half awake looking at a sheet at about belly level and I hear the Doc tell one of the nurses to "Grab ahold of his penis and don't let it go". The epidural/spinal block deal kept me from enjoying the touching. I could feel the laser bursts in my head in 3's.

you stole my post.

Except I got the joy of laying in the ER puking on the floor for a half hour before they took me in back to give me the shot....almost wish I could get another one just because it felt sooooo good when it quit hurting.

awesome

Sounds similar to my first kidney stone ER visit. I just wish the nurse had gotten the shot into my arm on the first attempt, not her own hand.

I guess I shouldn't complain. My urologist said she removed 20+mm stone surgically from a guy a few years ago. Damn boulder.

One key thing is to drink plenty of fluids so that the ureters, and eventually the urethra, can fill frequently to their maximum diameter which is, hopefully, bigger than the stone, and allows the stone to float down the pipe.

Unfortunately, that means lots of bumping and scraping while floating, which is kinda like riding down the river in my boat.

The fact that Brewer is feeling the stone move is a good sign so far. And he's not the first or last person to self medicate with beer.

Dr. Rick, that sounds like a semi endorsement of beer to relieve pain.

The only medication I have had that made me want it again was Verced (sp?). Everything else made me feel like crap. I had back surgery last May. I had them take me off the pain meds a few hours after waking up, as the meds made me feel so bad. The next day I got out (early because I was off the pain meds) and after the drive from Kirkland to Post Falls I got in my chair, looked at the bottle full of pain meds and told my wife to throw them away and get me a beer. A few kokanees and I was much better.

Stick with the plan Brewer. Sounds like your strategy is working. I have not experienced the pleasure of a kidney stone yet, but I have seen others, so I hope your just drinking beer for fun soon.

I too am a fetal position club member. Lasted one night and passed it with the help of "Dilaudid" , great stuff and I have had lots of different types.4.5 mm and I bow to those that have gone bigger.Rolling that big a ball down the gutter is one memory you won't forget soon...

Changed the diet and lost the diet pepsi, now I drink more water and lots more beer!

Good luck with the beer therapy!

Fishy

PS. Stam does in fact appear to the "The Man"

I'm not sayin", I'm just sayin" that folks self medicate. I think the trick is to know when enough self medication is enough, and another intervention is needed. Prolly best to listen to the women and chillen just about then, cause they will be right.

More water, Brewer!!

DD, I think you are thinking diuretics, and they don't help in this case. Part of the problem is dehydration and diuretics worsen that.

All kidding aside, I just Googled up some "home remedies" but there really wasn't anything that looked useful.
There was one thing that stood out....possible permanent kidney damage if not addressed.

Maybe a quick trip to the SWMC ER ?

Get the kids involved and have them decorate you like a pinata.
Then have them whack the sh!t out of you....
Start with Nerf bats, then fists -> rubber hoses -> broomsticks -> and then chunks of rebar if necessary.
The kids will love it.

Just keep jumping until the pain subsides. Keep drinking water, and when the pain starts to increase, start jumping again. Gravity and water are your friends.

When the stone comes out it will look like a small piece of gravel, nothing special even though it feels like a shards of glass

Can't add much to this discussion, Brewer, since I've never had a kidney stone of my own. Once, a student of mine brought his mother's kidney stones into the classroom for a little "show and tell" action. My principal was a "born again" rockhounder, complete with homemade bolo ties and massive stone and silver belt buckles. He had a standing offer to identify any rocks we would bring to him, so I took the kidney stones to him...just to see how good he was. He hemmed and hawed, held them up to the light, mumbled something about greenstones, and after a contemplative moment asked, "Where'd they come from?" Lucky for me, he had a good sense of humor.

Here's some music to help get you/your stone moving. It'll sound pretty good after the tenth or twelveth Keystone. Have a safe passage!

This is good on two counts....

1. We are seeking professional help.

2. Having a new, personal high water mark will allow you greater access on your favorite streams grin

Got word from Brewer. It's not KS's, the Doc doesn't know what's wrong. I'm sure he'll add more.

Get well Bro.

okay the KSs test was negatory. good news. these showed no evidence of KSs of any kind. she did show me something very interesting. she said, see these lines starting your spinal column? these are all the high water marks since your teens. she explained that water marks do not begin to appear in preteen children. this i did not know. i was fascinated! she said that in recently as ten yrs back there has been alot of high water marks. think about it, yes we've had several large floods.

she noticed that my inerds seemed shaken, she said to me "have you been hopping around trying to get the kidney stones to drop?" i said just a little. doc says thats the stupidest theory ever, or anyone could do!!! thanks BD. at this point i kept very quite about the brewer beer theory.

also there was no evidence of a gerbil either. SS your an ass!

so i seem to be free of KSs. i left with a jar of oxycodone though... thats a score.

still have the same terrable pain in my side.

any other theorys?

Anyone tired of hearing about these stones yet? Holy crap, I know that I have had my limit! Brewer, move onto a new diagnosis... I've perused through all of your test results, and they all exhibit prime physical health; healthy as a horse, which Dr. Rick will appreciate.

I hope you get well soon. smile

well almost but, it's taking forever!

true story, 2 weekends back we were driving just past the bonni dam. there's a small injun outpost to the right. they sell smokesalmon, at least it says on a piece of plywood spray painted in black. well there was a another chunk of scrap plywood next to the smokesalmon one. saying injun faith healer today. [censored] i thought what the hell. pulled into the outpost and inquired about the "doctor". leon broken feathers pointed us over to a sweat lodge. seemed inocent enough. wife and kids stayed in the van. i found myself soon inside the tight sweathouse. expecting to see edgar. after about an hour of seeing doctor dog spawner i was not only very buzzed but the kidney stone pain was finally gone! i took a final hit off the bottle of firewater and paid the doctor. been feeling great ever since.

yes a total let is right. was looking forward the the entire drama of being doubled overin pecker pain! wreathing in agony screaming qoutes of tourettes guy. so yes very much a "anti-climatic" let down.

however never claimed to have them, just thought i did. this thread was great too.

still thinking about sharing my story of the exwife shiving brewer in the shower.
