It's better to offer them good press...if they are willing to earn it.

Just following up on this thread from much earlier in the year... The chef I talked to (Peter Birk) is moving to a new restaurant. http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/blog/2011/11/harborside-restaurant-lands-rays-chef.htmlIMPORTANT to note that the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch list is at least seemingly a very important place to get listed... Right now Steelhead is not even its own category, and I am wondering what org (WSA?) should begin lobbying them?

Been some discussions on that with them, and because the region that is fished is so small ... they're not sure if they want to start the ball rolling with it. But I know that some groups are interested in pursuing the matter further if aggressive schedule remain in place.

Bob,
I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but only realized this post about the chef moving is just an add-on to many January 2011 posts. I think an update on Ray's current menu and their ultimate response to the much earlier issue is only fair. Tis a long time since original discussions and in some sense defeats the purpose of the original contact with Rays Boathouse.
FYI, I have no relationship with them.
What say you. I strongly agree with MPM post of January 20, 2011.

Yoke's in Spokane is advertising on billboards...."Fresh Columbia River Wild Steelhead." I email the store manager, trying to educate him about how valuable these fish are to the people who shop at his store. He did not find my comments kindly. He says he has visited the "Wild steelhead farms" lol. I think alot of it is mis=advertising, but at any rate, should we take kindly to them teaching the less informed nonfisherman that this is ok? Yoke's in Pasco is also advertizing wild steelhead.

Looked at the Yokes website tonight and under their Spokane market specials, they state that their Steelhead are 'farm raised'. Haven't checked the other store adds.

I'm sure Pacific Seafoods is thanking you all for the free advertising.

I'm not particularly fond of Pacific Seafoods, but I believe the issue is Wild vs. Farm Raised seafood. Might as well stick to the issue. I thought farm raised protects wild, net caught, and by catch sales...so must ask...
What are you talking about and what does it have to do with the issue at hand?

You are looking at the Oregon fish and game site. Tribal fishing continues here in WA as described below. http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/tribal/#graysharborYou are still off issue, although I agree that the fish may be misrepresented as fresh and wild. They are now represented as fresh farm raised. What say you? King

"Fresh Columbia River Wild Steelhead." Guess I was reading this phrase and as far as Columbia River it's managed jointly so info posted on ODFW site is valid for both states.

Not aware of natives netting in the park. I spoke with the rangers at the Queets on Sunday. They said the hatchery had brood stock guys placing nets and researchers netting and releasing fish for some reason. If we were at the same place that might have been what you saw.

I went to Rays facebook page and asked this question. Do you provide wild steelhead and if so where are they harvested?
They have been netting the Queets inside the park as long as I can remember.

Ray's Boathouse, Cafe & Catering Hi Greg, Ray's does not serve steelhead so we do not have any information about where they are being harvested
That was thier reply to my post on thier facebook wall. Wonder which is correct. Interesting in one of thier photos you can see commercial fishing going on in the back ground from Rays.
