Thought I'd share an article I just came across:

Article:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Minnesota to ban fishing in state parks. "Impaling him on a hook and ripping him out of his environment is cruelty to animals, plain and simple," said Dan Shannon, who is leading PETA's "Fishing Hurts" campaign.

The group launched its campaign by sending a letter to Bill Morrisey, Department of Natural Resources director of parks and recreation.

"The violent process of fishing and its consequences do not complement the peace and tranquility of a state park," Shannon said in the letter.

Speaking last week from PETA's Norfolk, Va., headquarters, he said this is the animal rights group's first anti-fishing campaign. It also began lobbying in Louisiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Michigan.

"Fishing is just hunting in the water," Shannon said, adding that Minnesota already bans hunting in state parks. "The scientific evidence clearly states that fish can feel pain."

In a return letter sent to Shannon last week, Brad Moore, the DNR's assistant commissioner for operations, said he does not believe anglers or their activities are damaging to state parks.

"We have no intention of banning fishing in state parks," Moore wrote.

Shannon said that because fish don't make a noise or a facial expression upon being hooked, they receive less sympathy from the public than do mammals and birds, he said.

Rich Enochs, president of the Win Cres Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Winona, said: "It's an interesting position, but I can't seethe point.

"A total ban seems to be contrary to any sort of reasonable balance on outdoors philosophy," he said.

Shannon said PETA's campaign hopes to foster a public debate and doesn't expect people "to agree with us overnight."

Garry Barvels, manager of Whitewater State Park, said he didn't understand why PETA would send the letter.

The park, like many in southeastern Minnesota, offers fishing for stream trout. The winter fishing season is open for catch-and-release using only hooks without barbs.

"They're not really hurting the fish that way," Barvels said. Of the PETA campaign, he said, "I don't know how to even answer those people."

PETA needs to go away. I bet none of those PETA members have even enjoyed a nice quite day on a lake with friends and family. Partly because they probably do not have any friends and family. They have way to much free time and to much negative energy. They are like professional protesters.

Sad, sad, sad! frown

This is just what I brought up in the catch n release debate we had a few weeks ago. PETA people are working on a different level than we are. They are not interested in what fishermen are interested in. They are not interested in what meat eaters are interested in. They are only interested in being "protectors" of all animals. And if that means they take away activities that people have been doing for thousands of years, they don't care. They feel they are on a higher moral ground than the rest of us. Which is why you will never, ever, win an argument or convince them of any other position. Because once someone is convinced they have the high moral ground, arguments become useless. I think that is the most important thing to understand - it applies to any radical group or belief. When it is so far from the center it becomes fanaticism. That's why things like eco-terrorism occur. These people have given up the moral compass that most people have and have replaced it with a new moral compass. Which is what makes them truly scary.

Awhile back, I posted a website with a petition to review/revoke PETA's tax-exempt status. If anyone out there still has access to the petition website, post it here... again. Mike, seems to me I saw this over on Washingtonlakes maybe??

All fisher people do not have to agree on every thing, but we must be ready to lay down our bobbers, flies, spinnerbaits, and powerbait to do battle with PETA. They will be comming to a lake, stream, or pond near us soon. If they win the east coast it is only a matter of time before they take us over. I dont want to be b*tching about powerbait when they come.

Have you hugged a fly fisherman today laugh

I'm not paranoid it's just that everyone is out to get me. wink LOL

I remember the petition. It was over on Bob's forum and I think we pasted it to this one. If you run a search on "Peta" on his forum I'll bet it shows up. I may do this later if I get a chance.

Peta always does crap like this. They write a letter, send it off to someone important, and then make a press release. The letter is ignored, and things go on as normal. They've pulled this stunt tons of times and it always works like that. Remember when they tried to keep that bass tournament fisherman (forget his name) off the front of Wheaties boxes? The cereal company got so many letters in favor of him being on the box that they ran it anyway. Peta fumed, anglers laughed, and life went on.

Peta is all talk. They'll never get out and actually DO anything, they just whine a lot and expect people to pay attention to them. When was the last time they sponsored a no-kill animal shelter (or any animal shelter for that matter) or a bank clean up operation? I'll tell you when: never. They only do this stuff so they can look like they're doing something with all that money gullible people send to them. At one time I used to pay attention to them, but I've come to realize that it's just not worth the time and effort it takes to listen to their **** shovelling.

As an American, I will defend to the death PETA's right to be PETA. :p

That said, have you noticed they have some good vegetarian recipies? As I'm in my late 30's, I need all the help I can get keeping the weight off. This helps me keep going in and out of canyons and up and down hills in pursuit of Fish & Game. laugh

On this subject, all I can say is it is quite obvious that no one ever took them fishing. Every year I take a couple of people under my wing and teach my kind of fishing. Last year I took young man out and showed him how, a month later he was taking other people out and doing the same. This year I've got 3 students age's 11, 13, and 21. The look on there face when they catch there first trout is well worth the effort. The personal satisfaction I receive is just great. So if you have a neighbor kid that want's to learn take the time out and help him along, it will benefit not just him / her but all of us and our great sport. Now something else to remember is all of the income our sport generate's is enormous, with licenseing fee's, tag's, boat's, boats, camper's, tackle, not to mention tourism, and all of the job's that depend on us to participate in our sport. Politicians at least smart one's realize this, so as far as the Peta movement is concerned it's nothing that I get to excited about. Sure there a pain in the a%%, but this is Amercia and everyone is entitled to there opinion. So with all of this massive amount of money we put into the economy I don't think the politicians or the general public will take them to seriously. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't pat attention to what there doing, we should alway's be prepared to protect our right's.

Setting the whole "is fishing ethical" argument aside, the problem with these PETA people is that they are for animal rights THEY ARE NOT ENVIROMENTALISTS!!!!! They will pursue the rights of a single individual animal but they do absolutely nothing for the species as a whole! They don't care if fish go extinct, just as long as they are not in any pain during their extinction..

All anger and frustration aside, I don't think PETA even deserves any mention in this forum. For they are not worthy of any recognition by the quality people that partake in this forum!

That is just my opinion.

Hey, guys...

Here's the post I put on Bob's main fishing page a while back. I don't know if it's still active (the link to the petition), but it's still on the following link:

Fish on...

Todd.
