SW, I just heard on the news that it's very hard to get thru to Japan on cell phones due to clogged servers...but that text messages are getting thru just fine...FYI in case you have a hard time getting ahold of your sister.

Aberdeen is still here. No issues on the coast.

We had Japanese exchange students every so often at our house while I was growing up. We still stay in touch with a few. Dad is part of the Olympia Sister City program with Kato (Yashiro), so he is trying to contact the folks he knows. I'll let him know about texting. Kato is right on the east coast about 180 miles south of Sendai.

I know my mom has been able to text with her OK. Last night while the quake was in progress she was able to get through to her on the phone. She was freaking out and barely able to stay on her feet. My mom could hear the rumble through the phone. Completely surreal.

Haven't had any of my texts to her answered as of yet but I know she has been trying to get through and know as of this morning she is OK and with her husband.

This is a visual on wave heights propagated by the quake across the Pacific.

According to this article, the Japanese quake caused the length of a day to decrease by 1.6 microseconds. They attribute it to an increase in the earth's mass. Someone is going to have to explain that one to me. How did the mass increase? Nothing is missing, just moved around. Do we have a physicist in the house?

WASHINGTON – You won't notice it, but the day just got a tiny bit shorter because of Friday's giant earthquake off the coast of Japan.
NASA geophysicist Richard Gross calculated that Earth's rotation sped up by 1.6 microseconds. That's because of the shift in Earth's mass caused by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.
That change in rotation speed is slightly more than the one caused by last year's larger Chile earthquake. But 2004's bigger Sumatra earthquake caused a 6.8-microsecond shortening of the day.
The Japan quake is the fifth strongest since 1900.

Does that work for or against eliminating daylight savings time?

I may have to upgrade my alarm clock to account for that.

The ship I was on was homeported in Yokosuka and I was curious how the Navy's facilities did so I checked the Navy Times. There are 8 Navy vessels on the way to Japan to assist and besides the carrier Ronald Reagan, sent some amphibious and dock landing ships which is good as one of the problems in Haiti was access to unload since the dockage had been severly damaged. It sounds like the 38,000 + military folks we have stationed in Japan are ok. Mooring lines on two attack subs in Guam were snapped but tugs got the subs back to the dock safely.
More here: http://www.navytimes.com/news/2011/03/navy-sends-8-ships-tsunami-relief-031111w/

On the way from patroling the coast of Viet Nam heading back to Japan, we had to run from a typhoon when it took a turn toward. Big seas and we took a 48 degree roll at one point. To surf down a big wave in a 250 ft ship is jaw clenching. I just can not fathom being on a ship and encountering a wave the size of the ones resulting from this quake.

For those interested in the impact of the tsunami on natural resources it apparently killed quite a few of albatross chick, and probably other seabirds, on nesting islands out in the Pacific.

Sol,

Mass wasn't gained nor lost... simply shifted.

The quake in essence was the earth’s way of shifting the orientation of the casting brakes in your Curado. Change in distribution of weight effects rate of rotation.

Port of Newport just shut down again...

Much larger waves which impacted Hawaii around noon have people here a bit nervous. Old man just launched the sled to do a little crabbing only to have the harbor master refund his launch and tell him to pull it back out...
