So, why doesn't her finance grab the gun and shoot that sucker himself instead of getting his ass beat?

It's unfortunate that the engaged couple had to experience the trauma of home invasion and shooting the perp, but fortunately things turned out perfect for the perp.

As for why the fiance didn't shoot the perp himself, I'd think his first instinct was to get the intruder off of and away from his girlfriend, which he did. While he did that, she thoughtfully got the handgun and then shot the perp. Good teamwork; theirs' should be a good marriage.
