So, any tips on the silver fishing?
I hear they are bitting or will be soon.
I'm a new guy to the salt.
Getting a downrigger this weekend, what else should I buy.
What about rod and reel? What weight rod? What test line?
Sorry I'm pretty clueless here. But want to learn.

Thanks for any and all tips.

Your tip might seem like common sence to yourself, But might be useful to me.

I caught a 6 1/2 lb silver this evening off of Redondo. The funny thing was the fish was at 75 feet off the 'rigger. Normally you find silvers right on the surface.

Fish for silvers with what you have for kings. You can go lighter on the gear too. Try trolling a Coyote spoon or whole herring by itself with 2oz of weight in front of it.

Experimentation is the key word here. They can be anywhere from the surface down to 65-75 feet deep. And, they take a BIG variety of lures. Remember to troll faster than you would for kings. Silvers like it fast!

Lots of action and lots of flash will help put silver in the boat. Spoons are great along with bait and hoochies. Blues, purples and greens are hot colors. I perfer a dodger to try and keep the gear lite. Go a bit on the short side with your leaders and very your speed. Try using a med action steelhead rod and reel. Use what ever line your confortable with and remember silvers like more open waters so you don't need to be on the shore line with everyone else. Hope this helps.

Silvers will go after the white/glow hoochie with a green Hot Spot right on the surface. Silvers are not real elusive like kings.

I have caught them setting my 'rigger ball and they have chased my 'rigger ball back to the surface. rolleyes
