Good question Jerry. I have no idea and don't (and wont) try to claim to know.
No matter what we beleive, we still are left with the bigger question - where did anything come from? Anyone who claims to be an athiest, cannot, in my question, be a true scientist. To claim to be objective and then claim to know the origins of the universive when there is no way to know how anything came to be is plain stupidity. The only true scientific approach would be to claim to be agnostic, then explain how you believe everything came to be.

I would go as far to argue that most religous people have a greater claim to their belief in God, as they most likely will claim a supernatural experience. An athiest can only claim that he has not experienced anything and thereforth can be sure it doesn't exist. Any reference to existing religions is moot, as even if they are all wrong, it still does not negate the possibility of a higher being.

You'll note above that I didn't take much in the way of sides at all in the debate, just noted that if you are going to have an opinion, do not base it on politics, and for God's sake, don't even let religion in the door during the conversation, or it will now look a lot like the waiting room outside of a cirucus interviewing for new clowns.
