I guess the question to the teacher would be, "Do you have a problem with my son taking off the first two days of school, or do you have a problem with him taking that time off because he spent it hunting(very successfully)?". . .. . . If it is the first part, then he may have a point (not in my book, but according to some), if it is the second then tell him to F off and go eat his soyburger and tofurkey. . .. . . .

Fishranger et al...
Point taken. I will follow up and see what the teacher has to say. I realize it is an emotional subject but I expected at least one reply that recommended letting sleeping dogs lie.
I suspect kicking the bees nest may result in potential retribution and more publicity. The latter doesnt bother me as much.
Thank you

Awesome! Congrats to Jake and to you as well for the commitment in working towards getting him that buck. Way cool!

Thanks to a girl in his class and Facebook, the whole school knows where he was during the first two days of school. The vast majority of the response has been positive except, according to Jake, one teacher openly disapproved in class.
Opinions? Strategy? Should I just let it slide too?
I'd probably go to the school and tell the teacher to mind his own fuckin' business. Then I'd stop by the principals office and tell him what the teacher said. Its not very professional of the teacher to call your son out in class. Actually,I'd probably have my wife stop by the school for me. With my temper, I tend to say things I shouldn't. My wife is much better at the calm, cool, and collected thing.

Congratulations to you and your son! Your son learned more in those few days of hunting than he will ever learn in all of the rest of the first 2 days of school he will have! Parents would take me out of school for a week for both rifle deer and elk seasons. Requested my homework ahead of time and took it with me. Most teachers approved and didn't give me anything to do. The ones that didn't, gave me my homework and kept their mouths shut. Different world 35 yrs ago. Again, Congratulations!

I took off many a day to hunt and fish with my dad. . . .those are the days I remember (and regret I didn't do it more as an adult now that he is gone), not the ones sitting in class. . . . .. .
JTD have you talked to that teacher? Just curious . .

No, and I will hang my head in admitting it.
Ever since the divorce, the ex has covered the school responsibilities since she doesn't work and because I am mostly not involved, I did not bother to change that. I went with the let sleeping dogs lie plan.
But mostly I am a victim of my own apathy, in this case.

No shame, was just wondering if here was clarity there .. . . . . "if it isn't a problem, don't make it one" is a good guideline. . . .

I should have dealt with it. The guy deserved to be confronted but I am not sure Jake would have appreciated me making a scene and I doubt Jake would have benefited from it either.
