Wow interesting. I have been wondering if or when the next big one will occur.
I shall keep my eyes on the lookout. And reflect on this story.
Can't imagine Russia coming out on top though.
Thanks

Doesn't that fit into the author's premises of crisis caused by disproportions?

Perhaps a greater concern will be what China and Russia may do to our proxy/creditor in response to such an act in this global game of chess....

Should the author's premise(s) manifest, coming out on top of what would remain may be a hollow victory....

Some of the pieces are moving around on the ol' board of late....

George H. W. Bush is reportedly bobbing off of Syria, and the Rooskie navy just delivered S-300 missiles in the same AO. NATO's surrounding of Iran and connecting the dots along the Rooskie southern border countered?

Seems Dmitry Medvedev is also targeting the European missile defense shield, and going to full combat alert in accord. Click on *cc* to get the English subtitles....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=eBf0I-rB0m0#!

At 6:55 in--

"First, I am instructing the Defense Ministry to immediately put the missile attack early warning radar station in Kaliningrad on combat alert. Second, protective cover of Russia's strategic nuclear weapons, will be reinforced as a priority measure under the programme to develop out air and space defenses. Third, the new strategic ballistic missiles commissioned by the Strategic Missile Forces and the Navy will be equipped with advanced missile defense penetration systems and new highly-effective warheads. Fourth, I have instructed the Armed Forces to draw up measures for disabling missile defense system data and guidance systems if need be... Fifth, if the above measures prove insufficient, the Russian Federation will deploy modern offensive weapon systems in the west and south of the country, ensuring our ability to take out any part of the US missile defense system, in Europe. One step in this process will be to deploy Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad Region. Other measures to counter the European missile defense system will be drawn up and implemented as necessary. Furthermore, if the situation continues to develop not in Russia's favor we reserve the right to discontinue further disarmament and arms control measures. Besides, given the intrinsic link between strategic offensive and defensive arms, conditions for our withdrawal from the New START Treaty could also arise."

The stakes are rising but there are great Black Friday deals at Walmart....

The increasing threats of military action against Iran are of course in violation of the UN Charter, and in specific violation of Security Council Resolution 1887 of September 2009 which reaffirmed the call to all states to resolve disputes related to nuclear issues peacefully, in accordance with the Charter, which bans the use or threat of force.

The U.S./POTUS however only uses the UN when it can be manipulated and leveraged to suit it's own purposes, and ignores the UN when it's purpose and charter do not suit it's purposes.

Historians will and should be harsh on this age.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman trying to improve her chance to buy cheap electronics at a Walmart in a wealthy suburb spewed pepper spray on a crowd of shoppers and 20 people suffered minor injuries, police said Friday.

The attack took place about 10:20 p.m. Thursday shortly after doors opened for the sale at the Walmart in Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley.

The store had brought out a crate of discounted Xbox video game players, and a crowd had formed to wait for the unwrapping, when the woman began spraying people "in order to get an advantage," police Sgt. Jose Valle said.

"Faces were red," shopper John Lopez told ABC News Radio. "This one guy was coming up to my wife going, 'Call an ambulance! Call an ambulance!'"

It's too bad they don't watch FauxNews...they would have learned that pepper spray is just a "food product", and would have thanked her for giving them free condiments.

Fish on...

Todd

P.S. I'd have shoved that pepper spray so far up her ass she'd be spraying out her ears.

rofl .........very doubtful you'd have done anything of the sort. Most likely you'd have seen her "Obama Change" T-shirt, given her a big inner-city, metro-sexual kiss and proceeded to take advantage of the cheap deal on a Dungeons and Dragons video game, all the while hiding behind her large coat-tails.

Then you'd have blamed Fox news.

But you sound way tougher telling the internet how you'da handled a wal-mart shopper....... stick with what works siter.

RvW, I don't need the InterWebz, a gun, or anything else to "feel tough"...it's not a "feel" kinda thing.

For all the options out there, it's hard to not see Israel and any number of ME countries being a flashpoint...though Pakistan and India came pretty close a few years ago.

Scary but I have to kinda agree with Todd. Pakistan is a loose cannon.
A segment of the country wants to progress into the 21st century.
Another segment wants to wage Jihad against the West and India,
their traditiional enemy. Any excuse is a good one. Like the supposed
air action against their innocent border guards. Lotsa stories there.
We should do a Bin Laden on their nuke capability and off the
expertise peddlers. Then stop all aid and let em stew in their own
juice.
Wishful thinking.

I stopped crying for Pakistan years ago. They're pretty dirty. Go ask Benazir Bhutto. Oh wait, she's dead.

One of the main reasons we don't attack them outright is that they have nukes.

Pretty sure that we can either own or destroy that stuff when we want to.
Those F16s that we gave them very likely wouldn't get off the ground.

Good thread, which kinda wraps a lot of the news of the day all into one neat package, like this article which I agree with:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/sdr-same-demented-regime

from the article:
"So this is where it gets dangerous. If I am correct in my logic above they might realize that they have exhausted their conventional options. This means the playbook shifts to the unconventional. This probably means war. This is why the rhetoric is heating up against Iran right now. If they cannot get their way via conventional means I believe they have no problem whatsoever in wiping out a vast percentage of the world’s population to get their way"

Whatcha got in mind Slappy? huh

Another 10 year, multi-trillion dollar war where the American casualty potential is exponentially higher than Iraq and Afghanistan combined because they downed an unmanned drone in their airspace? eek2

If the issue could be solved with a 'beer summit'... why not?

gv - If you don't think that our foreign policy issues are being handled to your satisfaction... may I suggest that you grab your m-16, hop the next flight to Teheran and let 'em know in person.

It would sure save us a lot of blood and treasure. thumbs

4Salt,
You don't know which party I vote for so it shows your ignorance. All I said is they shot down (Iran did) a drone last year and did nothing and you took it as if I was saying something about our foreign policy. So you know what they say when you assume.

I agree with RVW as well. Unfortunately, history shows that that is exactly where our military members are killed (post Civil War, or course). Foreign soil (be it desert or not) is where our soldiers go to fight.

Some of us grew up remembering "Duck and Cover" drills at school, the cold war, Nikita Kruschev and his famous rant, "We will bury you!", N/S Korea, etc.

Are we headed down a similar road now? Who knows. Crazy bastards in crazy lands are scary. World population of seven billion and growing (that's more than double since I served)......can't keep that up......there WILL be an equalizer at some point......like it or not. I read on the front page of several Middle Eastern (English Language) newspapers that Saudi Arabia is now looking to get in the Nuke Club. The reason given was that it was in order to protect themselves from a perceived thereat from both Iran and Israel. Just what we need another nation with nukes in a politically volatile location on the globe.

Follow the link below to see daily front pages from papers throughout the world.

The continuing saga....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIvdeuGItoY&feature=player_embedded

Seems that the CIA may have gotten pick-pocketed....

http://www.military.com/video/aircraft/p.../1316789858001/

The subject drone in the video above doesn't look like it was either shot down or crashed for some unknown cause. Perhaps, our astute leaders, in sending the bulk of our electronics technology and manufacturing off-shore, resulted in the military procurement of Chinese-manufactured components for the subject drone.... The implications/extrapolations of such a hijacking, if true, likely launched simultaneous payloads of schit into copious tighty-whities....

The unknown would be are the Israelis going to use conventional or nuclear ordnance when they do the big hit on Iran.

In 1973 a friend of mine was in the Marines on a ship in the Med.
When the October War was going badly for the Israelis his battalion was issued Israeli uniforms. They didn't have to go ashore but they were ready in their Israeli uniforms. I guess the powers that be wanted to try to hide our possible involvement from the Russians and Chinese.
If anything bad happens now, we'll be right in the middle of it with or without the IDF uniforms.

The only hope is that moderate Iranians will take back their country from the lunatics that are currently in charge.

True. Until the 1979 Islamic revolution Iran was a progressive, even "Western" country. Well educated and pretty advanced according to an old friend who had been stationed there when he worked for the State Department. But by now a whole generation has grown up under Islamic stone age mentality and leadership. Are there enough moderate Iranians left to actually influence the country?

My impression is that younger Iranians are cosmopolitan and are not very receptive of the old hardliners.

As in many countries, if the old hard liners die off without someone (including us) doing something to hatch a new batch of hard liners, then things will change.

Gentlemen,
Perhaps, your subsequent comments to my post above reflect the fact that you either missed my point, or failed to make the implied extrapolations. How's this for a dot....

An _________ sub launches a tactical nuclear missile at Iran. The missile is detected by Iran and the incoming missile is redirected at Tel Aviv, or the launching sub, or....

Perhaps, if true, the Iranians issued a very loud shot across someone's bow that was unheard by most....

Perhaps, if true, the Iranians issued a very loud shot across someone's bow that was unheard by most....

This is fiction.
If the attack did happen it would be an Israeli air strike or Tomahawks from a US surface ship. (and probably our air)
Can't see the military necessity for a secret-squirrel submarine attack.

You just have to keep the first one secret. After that it doesn't matter.
Hope it never happens, though.

My hope as well. Just to be clear, my submarine example could easily be extrapolated, by one with the capacity/desire, to a Predator drone that is armed, and the Iranians hijack same near their airspace and dump its payload in similar fashion. But that would be the second time it happened, and after some tighty-whities were laundered.... wink

All I'm proffering is that our presumptions of technological/military superiority may prove to be a mere mirage with dire consequences. Especially if the Iranian's were indeed successful at breaching a drone's security protocols. Given the present trajectory of NATO continuing to connect the dots along Russia's southern border, and recent US history, time will likely tell....

The Iranians may be able to react, but I don't believe that they are very strong in the secret squirrel department.
They fought the Iraqis to a draw. They weren't resourceful enough to keep their F14's flying.

They have historically turned to Europe, namely Germany, for basic technology.
