Hard line Republicans refusing to raise taxes. Hard line Decomcrats refusing to reduce entitlements. Some of the same hard immovable positions many have taken here. There is no balance. Something needs to change. A few steps by each side back toward the middle would be nice to see.

We know this about Republicans and Democrats in Congress already.
What I'm asking is WHY do you think they're taking these "hard line, immoveable" positions in the first place?

Why is nobody crying fowl when the Republicans refusal to discuss any tax increase what so ever comes straight from a pledge to a DC lobbyist, Grover Norquist.
Why is the Congress of the United States being held hostage by a pledge to a DC lobbyist?
That question needs to be answered.

Gutz, to be correct, the Dems' *were* ready to compromise on entitlements, what they wouldn't compromise on was not having any new taxes as part of the plan.
There's an enormous difference between the party insisting that something is OFF the table (republicans) and the party insisting that *everything* has to be ON the table (dems).
This failure is a pox on all their (and our) houses, but I still believe what masquerades for a "conservative" party currently is an entirely unspooled echo chamber that boils all issues down to 3 word sound bites.

The rich are doing great and usually get what they want from our system of legalized bribery. The circus in Congress is just an ass covering for the politicians to make the people think they are fighting for them and not the few behind the curtain pulling the strings..

I think the Republicans couldn't have done more damage to themselves than by exiting the Super Committee without giving in to the "tax the rich" cry from everywhere. This seems beyond foolish to me, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it costs them dearly. I know that I am not all that gung ho on the tax the rich stuff, but there is some truth to the fact that it would be helpful. Couple that with a cut back on spending and we get er done. Fkn Politicians!!

The Republicans' strategy of blocking every deal suddenly doesn’t look so smart. So if Congress does nothing, two sequestration processes go into effect: A budget cut and a tax increase. These two measures will cut over $4.5 trillion from the U.S. deficit over the next 10 years. That’s more than the Simpson-Bowles Commission proposed. And as Ezra Klein points out, that’s $3 of tax increases for every dollar of spending cuts. http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/...-lot/?hpt=hp_c1Perhaps their overzealous genuflecting to a DC lobbyists self serving and treasonous pledge has back fired on them. To much grey area there? Fishy

Hank---"Let me clue you" That's rich you trying to give anybody a clue! What is it with The Sleaze Partiers that they don't want anyone else to proper but the Uber rich, corps and all of their ILK. Republican Deficit Hypocrisy! Recall the situation in 2003. The Bush administration was already projecting the largest deficit in American history--$475 billion in fiscal year 2004, http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/19/republi...e-bartlett.htmlFishy

How many republican presidents had deficit spending? All of them. In fact, of all the presidents in the last sixty years have had deficits. Harry Truman and Bill Clinton are the only two president in that time to have 3 years of consecutive balanced budgets (both were Democrats). The last Republican president to have a balanced budget was Richard Nixon in 1969. Each of the last 4 Republican presidents: Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush each set new deficit spending records during their administration's. Gerald Ford's record was a mere 60 billion dollars. Supercommittee member Pat Toomey proposed increasing tax revenues by $300 billion... Toomey. Yeah, his idea is to take the worst parts of the bush tax cuts and make them permanent, all while dropping the tax rate on the top 1% from 35 to 28%. In contrast, all those making less than $200K will see their taxes increase compared to current policy. Why is it that republicans are so intent on taking the most from those that have the least? Let me clue you onto something: Americans care where that sum is derived from.

voters prefer the Republican approach to closing the deficit — spending cuts only Sure they do...........until they have to name where the cuts will come from. They'll talk about a ketchup study, and foreign aid being slashed, and will still only be a couple trillion from closing the gap. It's kinda like the way an unnamed Republican will beat Obama in the upcoming election, but the RNC can't find a candidate with no name.

3 years ago it was "Hope and Change", what will the catch phrase be next? Like Bush's was any better, " I am the decider" or how about "Mission Accomplished", or "Damn fine job there Brownie". Yeah he sure showed us. Fishy
