I have emailed Tacoma Public Utilities about Swofford Pond at: power@cityoftacoma.org --concerning the out of control weed problem and suggested they put some grass carp in there. How about others do the same and maybe they might listen????

Thanks

I emailed the same place and told them to leave swofford alone.

The good fishing has just started to come back in there!

The last time they killed off the weeds they killed off the fish too!

Unreal!!!!!!!! Grass carp aren't going to kill off the lake!!!!! Way to go. Glad to see we fishers are always on the same page! Notice even Stacy had told them to do something about the weed problems!

Lets email everyone we have a problem with, better yet lets waste our time and go protest on a day we could be fishing. No no better yet lets call the news and get an investigative reporter on the case of everyone we have a problem with. And even better lets call the president and see if he cant tell them what to do.

Fu**ing hippies.

Anywhere there is any chance that carp could get into salmon waters the wdfw will not put them there. Swofford spills right into Riffe, So if they do do something about the weeds it will be chemical as usual.

Also, I am not a fan of Grass carp either. Duck lake and Silver lake were ruined because of them stinky terds. Sure the fishing gets better at first then it takes a nose dive.

Hi Guys,

Grass carp stocking is determined by several things. One of the most important being screening. So, as long as screening issues are resolved grass carp could be planted into Swofford Pond.

I do all the private and public permitting for them in southwest Washington. Silver Lake was the very first lake we put them in and the stocking rates have been greatly revised since then.

Grass carp are currently stocked in Lake Sacajawea, Klineline Pond, South Lewis County Park Pond, Silver Lake and just recently were stocked into Battle Ground Lake.

We've had great success in Lake Sacajawea and Klineline and will be monitoring Battle Ground Lake over the next few months.

They can be used successfully and after having worked with them for the last ten years, I think Swofford could benefit from them. The key is not to remove all the vegetation.

There still needs to be cover for the fish and food for waterfowl and habitat for other critters.

Just my two cents...

I fished swofford a couple of times late last winter and was impressed with this fishery...

lots of small bass and bluegill and planted trout.

there was a fair amount of open water (about 1/3 of the lake's water area) and lots of thick weed beds in the shallower water......

I profile this lake as follows:

Water is about 12 to 14 feet deep in the old creek channel which runs right along the north end of the lake where most of the "park and fish" access is located. This deep water continues southwest and then curve directly east leaving most of the south and southwest shorlines of the lake to be very shallow and weedy.

Last february and march I did very well on small lmb's and bluegill working along the shallow weedy southwest and southern shorelines. I caught lots of planted rainbows in the deeper water. All the fishing was done with 1/32nd oz jigs tipped with small plastic grubs.

I wasn't there during the warm season this year and so can't comment on whether or not the deeper areas "weeded up" but will check it again next feb or mar when the cowlitz river steelhead fishing slows down.....
