I'm not sure if I have the name correct, as it was some time ago (like the mid/late '70's(?) that Winchester/Remington (?) produced a plastic-sleeved bullet designed to add varmit capabilities to, say, a 30.06, or similar. I believe the bullet was one that fit a 223, but not sure about that either.
I've asked about it, but no one I know ever heard of such a thing. The concept was apparently abandoned, and I never bought them, as I only used my rifles for big game, and it's been so long ago, that I'm not sure if I even have the name right.
You gun guru's would know......was there ever a commercially produced plastic-sleeved round marketed? huh

You are correct on the name "Accelorator " I can't remember which company made them. They never proved to be accurate enough using the .224 dia. bullet, 55 grains as I remember, when fired in either a .270 or .30-06. Alas, bad press, expense of the rounds, and lack of performance pretty much drove the final nail in that coffin.

Thank you, BB. I was beginning to think I had imagined the whole thing. I remember seeing the boxes of that ammo stacked up in Swain's and always wondered what happened to them. At the time I wasn't interested in them, but the concept always intriqued me. Thanks for clearing that up.

Remington made that sabot round.

Thanks.
One more question. I did a search on it and actually got a result or two (I tried a long time ago and got nothing on it...spelling error maybe). There are comments that the round was inaccurate (one foot groups vs. 1.5 inch groups)....that seems odd to me. Do you think that Remington would even market a round that was that ridulously inaccurate? They must have tested it. Wouldn't you think?
I saw the "lack of rifling marks" argument as the main reason for it's demise. What's your take on that?

Saw some at Cabelas less than a year ago. Thought they were illegal.

No reason to be illegal.

True. Unless Art was referring to their use on big game under the .243 rule.....

I'm no hunter so this is probably a silly question. Why would you use a big game rifle to shoot a squirrel, or other vermin? confused

Something about being untraceable back to the gun they were fired from.

Hitting a thin skinned animal, like a bobcat, with a 150 gr .30 cal projectile results in a severely damaged pelt. It was an interesting concept.

Also when using a muzzle loader for deer it allows me to use a 200-240 gr .44-45 caliber bullet of better construction and profile than an all lead projectile for extended range over a 390-450 gr .50-54 caliber projectile.

I have hundreds of sabot rounds, plus the WDFW allows their use for hunting when using muzzle loaders.

Shotgun sabot slugs are also readily available.

The Accelerator was no .220 Swift, but similar ballistics resulted in what is know as *The Red Mist* where a prairie dog once stood 400 yards distant in a cattle farmer's field....

To savvy the concept, consider that cow steps in the 'dog hole and breaks leg. Farmer shoots cow and leaves for coyotes. Farmer and friends seek solace in vaporizing the little blighters at squinting distances. Much more fun than paper. Unless you're the 'dog.... wink

Sam, some hunters only have one rifle. This ammo was made in the most popular calibers & allowed shooters to effectively turn their hunting rifle into a high speed varmint rifle w/ just a change in ammunition & scope adjustment.

Your Grandfather's 30-06 went from shooting a 180 elk bullet @ 2700 feet per second, to sending a saboted 55 grain bullet downrange @ 4000+ fps.

This was pretty remarkable for the non-reloader, good concept I think.

I'd much prefer a 155 Scenar across the literal course. Tough to beat it's slippery nature for fending atmospheric conditions and the comeups are modest.

Hint.
