They found the guy in a creek. Looks like he died of hypothermia. Such a sad deal all around - A fine young woman dead. Her family destroyed. He was an Iraq veteran with apparent mental issues. Too sad in every way.

While it is true that the alleged shooter served our country, this does not offer any better excuse than a lot of other murderer's offer:
Broken family Bad school system Limited opportunities
I am happy that an apparent nut case that was heavily armed is gone.

You're partially right. Soldiers returning are being helped with there physical injuries, yet follow up on mental issues(PTSD) is lacking. VA has a long wait list for past vets (6+weeks in some cases) and current returning vets are numerous with many problems associated with re-integrating back into american society. (i.e. failed marraiges, foreclosed homes, etc.) Some people are saying that a ban on handguns/guns in Natl parks could have prevented this, BS, nothing was going to stop this guy from doing what he did. The Park rangers attempts to stop this guy from hurting anyone else was heroic, in my opinion. Say a prayer for everyone involved.

Bill Wade, the outgoing chair of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, said Congress should be regretting its decision to allow loaded weapons in national parks now.
He called Sunday's fatal shooting a tragedy that could have been prevented. He hopes Congress will reconsider the law that took effect in early 2010, but doubts that will happen in today's political climate.
??????????????????
What the hell is this guy talking about. The nut job shot four people, ran a check point and jumped out blazing away but certainly would have stopped to leave any weapons at the park entrance prior to entering had it been illegal. What an idiot.
Sad situation all the way around and to bad the guy did not get some help. Should be a wake up call but not about guns in the park. More about getting help for those that need it.

Maybe if there was a sign stating that weapons were illegal he would have stopped. Ya, right.

He wasn't a combat vet. Just a nut. Pretty much. The guy never saw the front lines. He was rear guard. Just an idiot. I'm pretty sure there were a number of laws that this guy ignored, like pointing weapons at people (assualt), shooting them (assault & attempted murder), and a slew of others. He ran, and he could have run anywhere, but he ended up choosing to run to a National Park. Saying the change in law that allows possession of firearms in a Nat'l Park caused this is ridiculous. Criminals don't follow the law.

This one hits pretty close to home. http://www.odmp.org/officer/21076-park-ranger-margaret-andersonThis is not a guns in parks issue, it is a good guy vs. bad guy thing. Unfortunately a good gal paid the price this time. No law, rule, or regulation can prevent these types of things from happening.

Once he had guns there was no way to prevent this...no law would have stopped it, no matter how many there were, or what the level of deterrence would be for breaking them.
A way to prevent a crazy man from getting a gun would have helped, though...clearly.
If only everyone had a gun and walked around with it loaded and pointed at the nearest person to you (who would also have a loaded one pointed at you) then we could prevent all gun violence.
As usual, however, besides the tragic and unnecessary deaths that occurred, violence will be done to any reasonable discussion of what to do about it...the two equally idiotic stances of "ban guns and no one will have them" and "make sure everyone has one so no one will ever use one" will be the prevailing arguments...both of which are equally stupid and wrong.
Fish on...

He wasn't a combat vet. Just a nut. Sorry to interject reality, but there are thousands of vets with non combat PTSD. You don't have to exchange gunfire with the enemy to be affected by the violence. Lots of Navy and Air Force folks transporting the wounded get it too, as do the Docs treating the injured. I respect your comment Marsha, but the guy was in commo, not in combat. Plenty of good men and women out there with PTSD who don't shoot 4 friends, and then kill an officer. I wish them all well.

Plenty more civilians with non-combat PTSD. PTSD can be brought on by any tramatic event such as a car accident. we don't look at other whack job murderers and say "well he was in that car accident a few years ago".

This guy was too young but for a lot they left a good living in a good economy and are now back with no job in a recession. More than PTSD that's gotta send some over the edge. King George F'd them all the way around.
