The American way. Blame someone else for your $h-tty decision. Then sue and collect because common sense is lacking in anyone not able to get out of jury duty.

I'm suing Busch, because someone I fish with drinks a lot of it, 'cause when he is on the oars and buzzed, he doesn't keep me in the zone at the right speed half the time, then gets up and takes a cast when he should be rowing....which directly contributes to how much quality fishing time I get.

Goddammit Busch Beer!

Yeah, my suit makes about as much sense as the one linked above...

I kinda' sympathize. Indians are genetically predisposed toward alcoholism, if I'm wording that right. Something like 1 out of 10 whites is predisposed, but about 9 out of 10 Indians are. It's a disease, and frequently the only choice is the first choice. And how many of us can pass up a drink?

Only thing is, for Indians I have known, they absolutely have lost control after that first drink. Simply no such thing as having "a beer." I've seen a guy have that first beer, and then uncontrollably have another and another. My father and step-father were alcoholics, but nothing like I've seen among Indians.

Setting up a mega-beer or liquor business across the road from a dry Indian reservation is pretty incriminating as regards the business intent: "sell booze to Indians who have voted their own land dry."

Much as I believe in free will, it sorta' flies out the window for those born with the alcoholic gene.

I was surprised in the Dillingham, AK liquor store when I went to buy a case of beer. The clerk refused service and kicked out two natives who were known drunks. That almost seems like illegal discrimination, but everyone supports that kind of action in the small town, except the hopeless alcoholics who are desperate to buy more booze. Similar thing, a friend told me about a skipper on a fish buyer boat coming into a dry village near Togiak. Natives come out in skiffs asking if he has any booze. He hadn't planned it, but found a whiskey bottle about half full and traded it to a native for a walrus ivory carving that would have cost around $300. Alcoholism is a serious disease.

That's a load of crap.

I'm insulin dependant. Should I sue the quick mart down the way because of all the candy and ice cream they have there?

Diabetes is a serious deisease, too. But I don't go around putting the blame on someone else when my sweet tooth gets the best of me.

Free will NEVER flies out the window if you have any will power or self-control, alcoholic or not.

Sorry if my sympathy meter didn't budge. My bullsh!t meter pegged, though.

+1 Dan.
Addiction is Equal Opportunity ...no different from anyone's right to getting married or finding a job. Everyone has a choice. There may be environments which persuade or heavily influence and individual, but that still doesn't change the fact I mentioned.

If that's the case then every GD'd indian should NEVER be allowed off of the reservation.

They can FOAD if they want to tell us what we can and can't do on our land!

Using the same logic presented in the opening link......all nicotine dependant people should be able to sue smoke shops.

As far as being an alcoholic goes, it's a disease of, "I ain't got it."
No grocery store shut down when I got sober, and guess who was responsible for my problem?

Fkn Dan S., that's who! Prick! wink

No, me, of course.

If it was that simple there wouldn't be any alcoholics.

I agree with most of what has been said here, but I think Salmo g. pointed out an important distinction regarding this case. The article states that the "town" where the store in question lies has a very small population. The "locals" probably couldn't even support a store on their own. Perhaps there was a "compelling" reason for the owners to set up shop directly across the reservation boundary....

I don't think this justifies a lawsuit, but it is a reason to sympathize with the Tribe somewhat, in my opinion.

Lol, hell we are all dependent on insulin. Some make their own and some have to use an outside source.
I have type 2 also but don't need the shot. I can keep it under control
with exercise and sensible diet.
I agree with Salmo g in that putting a liquor store across the street
from a DRY reservation is a bit stupid and evil.
That 27 k a year in the Dakotas it the pittance paid to the Native
Americans for the Mega Acres they were swindled and murdered out
of.
The BIA has in the past and even now garnered the the most
corrupt reputations of any Federal bureacracy.
Wonder what genome research can do about that gene that pre-
disposes one to alcoholism.

Ban all gill nets.

I have Type I diabetes, so injections are the only way to control it.

It's easy to lose one's humanity and intelligence when responding to a complex and emotionally charged issue like this; you kept yours.

The Pine Ridge Reservation is home to 20,000 Oglala Lakota Sioux. The unemployment rate on the reservation is eighty percent. Four out of five households are impacted by alcoholism. Murder, suicide, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, thievery, accidental deaths, and impoverished living conditions are consequences of that alcoholism rate. Pine Ridge is a part of America; its residents are U.S. citizens living in a civic cesspool.

As you read through the posts on this topic:

Don't confuse facts, anecdotes, and opinions.

Don't confuse compassion with guilt.

Don't confuse diabetes with alcoholism. They are about as similar as golf and murderball. My father was diabetic. I took care of his medical needs. Think about the societal impacts of each "disease" before you make this comparison.

Here's some history on the Pine Ridge/White Clay problem:
