Firearm Storage Bill Introduced Despite Legislative Deadlines Anti-gun state Senator Adam Kline (D-37) and two other state Senators have introduced Senate Bill 6628, an unnecessary firearm storage bill, in an attempt to exploit the recent tragic shooting at a Bremerton elementary school. SB 6628 would single out firearms in the Washington statutes and make it a crime if a child obtains access to a loaded firearm that was stored in a location where the person reasonably knows that a child is likely to gain access. This is already covered in Washington’s Reckless Endangerment statute! The only reason to push this duplicative law is to demonize firearms in Washington law. Fatal firearm accidents are at an all-time low. If Senator Kline really cared about saving children, rather than trying to exploit this tragedy to attack firearms, he would be targeting poisons, items that suffocate children and objects on which kids choke because all three cause more accidental deaths to children than firearms. But we know that Senator Kline, who sponsored the semi-auto ban two years ago, is only interested in banning firearms and making life miserable for law-abiding gun owners. This legislation is a knee-jerk response to the tragic shooting of an 8-year old girl by a 9-year old boy at a Bremerton school last week. Rather than go after firearms, Senator Kline might better spend his time going after people like the boy’s mother, whose lengthy criminal record included possession of meth, marijuana delivery and forgery. The boy found the gun, which allegedly belongs to the mother’s criminal boyfriend, during an unsupervised visit to her house. There are nine days left in the 2012 legislative session. It is critical that you call AND e-mail your state Senator TODAY and respectfully urge him or her to oppose Senate Bill 6628. To determine your state Senator, please click here. You can also leave your state Senator a short message on the toll-free legislative hotline at (800) 562-6000. Additionally, call Senator Adam Kline TODAY in his Capitol office at (360) 786-7688 and let him know, respectfully, that you are appalled at his exploitation of the little girl in this recent tragic incident to further his gun control agenda. Ask each of your family and friends to also call Senator Kline so he will get the message loud and clear that law-abiding firearm owners are tired of his shameless attacks on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms! http://www.nraila.org/legislation/state-...amp;st=&ps=

Feelgood law.
Mom in Bremerton with boyfriend who has a felony criminal record had a .45 ACP pistol that her 9 year old got ahold of. 9 year old had gun in backpack, and it fired, striking a small girl in the gut. Very sad.
Sadly, there was already a law, or laws, on the books that mom broke by having said .45 ACP firearm in the house. Those laws did nothing to prevent this from happening.
I have no issue with having a penalty for a child's use of a firearm and having repercussion on the parent, but to think that the new law will stop it from happening, well, that is a bunch of bullsh!t.
Teach ALL kids about firearm safety, regardless of whether there are firearms in the home or not. That will do much more to save lives than this new law. That is a fact.

By the way, this event was already covered by "reckless endangerment".

How 'bout that...a cut-n-paste from the preeminent hater of cut-n-pastes.. Another thing I'll add is this Kline-Klown is a Dem...why do you always vote against your best interests? Figured you would bring your miasma to this topic as well as all the others that you dwell on. If you knew half of what came out of your maw you'd be dangerous. It's no wonder you spend the bulk of your time on here taking a beating for being a dumbass! Troll elsewhere. Fishy

It's really too bad the little girl wasn't armed so she could have shot the little boy dead before he so ruthlessly cut her down.

OK, I have avoided posting on this topic because my stance is pretty well known. So for the folks that don't want Kline's law, I have a couple of questions:
1. Can you name any law prohibiting an action that has ever stopped anything? Murder laws don't stop murder, speeding laws don't stop speeding. Can they provide a deterrent? Possibly so although it is difficult to determine what caused a non-action. Laws provide for punishment.
2. Why does the Gun Lobby (specifically the NRA) oppose this law so vehemently? It does not seem to run afoul of the 2nd Amendment and seems to foster responsible gun ownership - a quality that the NRA at least pays lip service to.

Would the new law come with a different/stiffer penalty than the Reckless Endangerement statute?
Sorry, but when I see the NRA, "demonize", and "Anti-" in one paragraph, any further "exploitation" of anything is full on 100% hypocritical.

I wonder how many of the 22,000 gun laws on the books were broken and will another one prevent this from happening, or are we just looking to lay blame somewhere?
I remember being taught in school how to shoot and taking my gun to school so I could hunt afterwards. How times have changed.

I agree with everything you stated but in the interest of clarity the WA state SC ruled that if a person resides with a prohibited individual the non-prohibited individual must make sure the prohibited person cannot access the firearm. It needs to be locked up in a safe without the prohibited persons knowledge of the safe combo. It was intended to not suspend a non-prohibited persons 2A rights because they were married or residing with a prohibited person. So in any case there is already a law (actually many) that would have prevented this tragic accident.

Mom has a record as well, so she too is a prohibited person. Lots of existing laws were broken in this instance, so it would be fairly easy to pile on and create a sentence of reasonable length using consecutive sentencing, if applicable.
I have no issue with punishment for the act, but to say that this new law will solve anything is silly.
Locking said boyfriend up for longer periods of time in the first place would have had more chance to avoid this issue, #1, than any new law. Educating all kids on firearms, #2, would have had more impact than any new law.
I talked with Adam Kline and he was instrumental in allowing the suppressor legislation through, so now we can use those tools in Washington. My guess is that he is up for re-election and needs to show his people that he is doing something.

Agreed. I didn't know she too was prohibited.
Because of Klines legislation I've been doing my homework on a can for my M14.
Kline has been watching too much Ken Schram as of late it would appear.

I haven't seen anything in the media yet about mom or boyfriend being charged with anything. Did I miss it? Anyone got a link?

I am not surprised that no one even attempted to answer my questions. Tis far easier to parrot the NRA talking points than to actually think.

excuse me for grouping you with Todd but you both seem detached from reality. Parroting the NRA? So glad there are organizations like the NRA, American Legion, Boy Scouts and VFW out there that manage to keep the light burning and dispel the miasma generated by the hand ringers, Do gooders, and just plain fools. NRA and proud of it.

Non-NRA and proud of it. The NRA have been asshats at times with their stances on certain legislation and issues.
Haven't seen anything on charges being filed against mom & boyfriend either. I'd welcome them, though.
