So we should pass more laws that will have no affect on illegal gun use.

That's something only a person with an IQ of 160 would perpose.

What are your ideas on prevention and rehabilitation?

The simple answer is that where the studies show that rehab creates citizens, and retribution creates rescidivism, we ought not worry too hard about retribution, and should focus more on rehabilitation.

That's if you want to prevent crime, that is. If you just want to send more and more to prison, then by all means just up the sentences.

And what is the definition of rehab? And after so called rehab.do you
put them on the welfare roles or find them jobs that are almost non existant?

Mavbe they could be sent to the moon and become miners.

The "incarcerate and punish" crowd will accomplish the same thing as the War on Terrah...create more of those who you are nominally trying to get rid of.

So you're fine with the adults possibly receiving punishment based upon the statute they are being charged under?

The adult criminal justice is not designed nor intended to rehabilitate, it's strictly designed to punish.

The juvenile justice system is designed to rehabilitate. Unfortunately a young girl is shot and the chances the young boy that did it, repeating it, is virtually zero. It was a terrible accident and highly unlikely he will repeat it.

Accidents happen and no matter how hard the school system tries to prevent accidents their 'prevention' failed. Perhaps the school should be penalized for not preventing this from happening.

Laws will not prevent accidents and won't EVER stop those inclined to lawlessness from doing stupid chit.

I know that you dumbed down your answer that I might possibly be able to understand at least part of it. For that I say thanks. Who's looking for retribution? And, what type of rehabilitation would help reduce gun violence?

If we're talking about minorities and crime, have you ever considered looking at the community leaders who continually blame everybody but the person who committed the crime? Or, is still just the rich white guys who are to blame? At some point, does personal accountability become an issue? I know it does for me. Or, should I just go ahead and be complete F'n a-hole and blame it on my great, great grandfather?

Rich white guys aren't the answer to every problem. If we're talking about minoriti

It's always about personal responsibility...and if it's a black guy named Jim, it's "Jim", not minorities...and if it's a white guy named "Ralph", it's fuckin Ralph, not white guys.

I don't know what crimes people commit that they can be rehabilitated from, or what kinds of people are easily rehabilitated...but there's no doubt that the studies have always shown that there are all kinds of recidivists who wouldn't have gone back to crime if they had been rehabilitated, and there are all kinds of petty criminals who are not petty criminals when they get out of prison, they are big time now.

So...here we go again.

Just heard on the news that while the "adult" was inside a store, and left his two kids in the car, one of the kids found a loaded handgun in the glove box, took it out, and shot his/her sibling.

Oh, yeah...the "adult"...looks like he was a cop.

Again, if only the other sibling was armed, he could have shot first instead of being a tragic victim.

Leaving a weapon that can be accessed by any child is horrendous parenting, unfortunately you cannot legislate common sense.

No on the odds and I'm with you it was probably a Glock, which brings up one of the issues with that particular gun and that is there really is no safety on it.

Still the true safety would have been conscientious control of that weapon around children, they knew where it was and like children acted when the adult was not around.

It seems ludicrous to have a gun for protection only to leave it available to access by children.

the true safety is between the ears. Hopefully some folks have a brain.

As far as handguns go Walthers, 1911s and such that do not have a cocked striker instead of a lowerable hammer are the way to go. imo

The little girl in this tragic case is dead. There is no felony possession case here. What should the Dad be charged with? My heart goes out to him and his family, I'm certain that he is suffering through hell on earth right now....

The cop in this case did one thing wrong.......one. And he will dearly pay for it.....most likely for life. I don't know him, but I can guess that his concerns are far from his own troubles at the moment, and I would imagine he is wishing he could change a lot of things.
He has/had good reason to pack as a badge never is off duty, and having a weapon around could very well be the life saver it is intended to be........unfortunately, he left the kids in the car with the glove box most likely unlocked......fatal mistake.
Unless you know this guy personally, cowardice doesn't even enter into the picture for me.....can't say one way or the other, and your judgment of what constitutes a coward maybe needs another look.
I would guess this cop will face prosecution, but the sentence won't even begin to touch what he already learned and is about to learn.
Terrible tragedy, and preventable.
BTW, Support does NOT necessarily mean condoning......the first means you care, the second means you agree......I doubt any of the cop's supporters agree with what happened.

Isn't all this quite obvious??

Wow!!!

First off my condolences to the family after this tragic event, I am sure they are devastated.

Next, I believe that most Officers are under some sort of oath or obligation to carry when they are not on duty, perhaps this may not be the case here. Time will tell.

But to call this man a coward is amazingly contrite and downright stupid. I do not know this man but he did go into a profession that puts him at risk during his regular business shift so I doubt he is a coward.

My insight would be that he is so used to having a weapon with him that he overlooked it in the glove, or just plain forgot and went about his errand, which we all know now has turned tragic.

The interwebz makes it too easy to armchair quarterback and second guess all things and then profess to the world that you are some sort of expert. Fact is none of us was there and this family, which consists of more than just this man, is living this nightmare, you fanning the flames does nothing to appease the families pain.

"Let yea who is without fault cast the first stone!"

applauseGotta agree. Cowardice is not applicable. When you
live with a piece 24/7 it kinda assumes the threat level of a rock,
unfortunately. Familiarity breeds contempt and so forth.
Never, never underestimate the Kinder. A problem solving brain
