What do you all think about using decs in your turkey set-up? Has anybody tried it, and if so had any luck. How many would you use and of what variety. Trying to get this whole thing nailed down so opener won't be another hike in the woods.

Most folks these days use a decoy while hunting turkeys. They're not mandatory but they usually help. I grew up in Pennsylvania hunting turkeys and decoys were illegal. We killed plenty of turkey just by calling them in. When you call a Tom at some point in time he expects to see a hen. In the wild the hen usually goes to the Tom or atleast meets him halfway. When a Tom comes looking for you when your calling him he expects to see a hen, there's where your decoy will help. Turkeys have excellent vision as well as hearing. They will pinpoint your location from along way off from just one call. I've had turkeys fly over 300 yards and land within 10 ft of my location. If you are using decoys a minimum would be one hen. Alot of folks use two hens and a jake. They sell these in packages. Some guys always put the hens facing away from them(the hunter) and the jake facing towards them (the hunter). Theory being the Tom will approach the hen from behind to breed or the Jake from the front to fight.

As a side note, please be very careful turkey hunting. Make sure the birds you are chasing are not another hunter and be aware of other hunters moving in on you or your decoy set-up. People are shot every year turkey hunting so be careful and as always be sure of what you are shooting at. I would also recommend to not sit directly behind your decoys if at all possible, just in case.
