The perpetually salary-cap plagued New Orleans Saints released Evans back in February, but Evans still had a relatively impressive season for an offensive lineman in 2015. Pro Football Focus gave Evans a solid 82.3 pass protection rating last year, which was significantly higher than any Seahawks lineman.

Signing Evans gives Seattle a big boost to their front five at a time when things are finally starting to look up.


So far at training camp rookie guard Germain Ifedi has been the standout player. Ifedi’s physical, never-back-down style has set the tone for Seattle’s rookies this year. A couple of times he’s been able to stand Michael Bennett up at the line of scrimmage.

During Friday’s practice Tom Cable shuffled around the offensive line a great deal. Several previously unseen combinations were out on the field, which was a strong indication that the Seahawks were planning to make a change. Evans doesn’t have to be an All-Pro kind of lineman to earn his keep, either. Seattle desperately needed a veteran of Evans’ caliber to help lead a unit that will feature five new starters in 2016.

Expect a lot more shuffling of the deck over the next five weeks, but if Ifedi lives up to the hype and Jahri Evans plays the way we expect, Seattle’s offensive line will be at least 40% less of a dumpster-fire than some people are predicting. In a game of inches, that could be huge.
