I have woodpeckers at my house and I know what they sound like. There is something else that I think is a woodpecker but it pecks way faster than the other peckers, any ideas? It pecks almost twice as fast as the normal peckers. I haven't seen it, only heard it.

The neighbor has a nuthatch that is boring through their siding to make a nest as I type this.
She has a pretty fast "rate of peck".....I think a little faster than a woodpecker.

Nuthatches usually walk up and down tree trunks searching for bugs.
I've never seen one so diligently peck away at something.
She's almost through and the neighbors decided to let them nest.

Same thing is going on at my neighbors. Flickers punched several holes through south siding that was soft from rot. He covered those holes with patches but left a small hole uncovered. Nuthatches came in and started to enlarge the hole and pull insulation out. Surprised me to see nuthatches drilling away just like tiny woodpeckers.

Sapsuckers.

That can surprise the hell out of you the first time you hear it inside the house.

It sounds like a drill on a stripped out nut going around and around at full speed.

Horned-up Flickers going Thompson machine gun on a galvanized chimney cap at dawn will make you say bad words....

I've even had them hang on the gutters and beat them up. Noisy, but harmless. Rather that than the siding. smile

This is mild compared to what they can really do.

Never gave a thought to installing a stainless steel chimney cap over the fireplace. . . . until this spring, either a downy or flicker is using it to proclaim his territory and attract a mate. Fortunately he didn't start up until after I woke up and got out of bed, or I likely would have take the same action as Stam's daughter. Funny how they find the loudest thing around. We've had pileated woodpeckers use the metal shroud on the parking lot lights at work, and that sound echoes a long ways.
