I have a Ruger 22 rifle, with a ten shot clip that holds long rifle cartridgers. I want to shoot VERY quietly as I live in an area where some neighbors will not appreciate me shooting the G.D. crows that are driving me nuts. Can I use a 22 short, if I hand feed them into the barrel one at a time? Also do they still sell the 22 birdshot rounds? If so, what is their range for crow killing, and how far will they carry?

I used to use the bird shot and have never had very much luck with them. The range on them isn't very far at all.

22 shorts will not feed into the Ruger 10/22 Yes you can shoot them single shot like but its slow. I would not shoot 22 bird shot out of your Ruger 10/22, it does not eject the shells and its a pain in the a$$ to get them out. 22 lr birdshot will not kill a crow. Who cares on what the neighbors say, your the one with the gun Take a 20oz pop bottle and stick it over the end of your barrel. That works. Or a tennis ball.

I don't too much care what the neighbors think, but there is a small problem whit the fact it's illeagl to shoot in my neighborhood. Please explain the pop bottle thing. If I just cut off the big end and shove the small end over the barrel, how do I sight.? Is that what you do . i.e. cut out big end and shove the neck over the barrel?

Are you sure it's illegal to shoot crows? I went to a web site called crow busters, or something like that, and it said every state in the nation has a crow season. I'm not sure when they are in season in Washington, but I sure thought they listed a season for us.

Larry, it's not illegal to shoot crows. They have a season, and it closed Jan. 31st. You can however shoot them anytime in the act of depredation.
I shoot .22 shorts out of my 10/22 all the time, but they're not real quiet. Less than a long rifle, but still quite noticable. If you want almost silent, get a .22 with a longer barrel and shoot Aguila .22 Colibri rounds. They are the same size as a long rifle, but with no gun powder, all they use is a primer. I shoot these out of my Marlin model 60,and they are quieter than my Crosman air rifle. The effective range is only 10-15 yds,but will kill a crow. They don't have enough oomph to eject by themselves, but are way easier to load singly.
Be careful, you don't want to get caught shooting inside the city limits.

Just take the cap off the bottle and tape it onto the end of your barrel. Only works with for one shot. Use cheaper lower FPS ammo to.

You could avoid the legal problems by using a pellet gun. July 3rd and 4th are open season on starlings at my house with .22 bird shot. From the kitchen window to the dog food dish is within range of the shot shells. Gun shots? What gun shots? I just heard firecrackers.

CCI makes a round called a "22 CB" it is a very low velocity, low gunpowder round. i can shoot it out of my Ruger 10/22 and it sounds just like a bb gun. it has about a 1/8 mile range and isnt powerfull enough to eject itself so the 10/22 acts like a single shot. its very quiet for plinking in the backyard and not disturbing the neighbors.
forget about using a tennis ball or soda bottle on the end of your barrel, that will just screw up your aim.

try shooting the CB LONG ammo. Its a standard .22 slug with a reduced powder charge. Very quiet and extremely deadly. I doubt they will cycle a semi auto. I shoot them in my old JC HIGGENS single shot. They will do a number on crows and any other pests you may have lurking around. Just remember that they will fly a long ways-similar to a short-so be aware! P.S.-They work really well on certain pesky sea mammals!!!!!!

I like a long thin muffles replacement for lawn mowers. they cut out the noise and they do not effect my aim. Tom

If you use a bottle, tennis ball,tee-shirt, muffler or anything else on the end of your fire-arm, you will be commiting a federal firearm offence, ( just so you know) all of these items are and will be considered as a silencer, do think about the consequences before you try these, But then like I have always said,"Who will ever hear it to know" my 2 cents
