I am going to purchase a new varmint riffle a Remington 700 LV SF but cant chose between a .223 and a 22-250. I am leaning towards the 22-250; it will be used mostly on coyote's and maybe cougars. Is their any reason why I should choose the .223? I am not worried about the coyote’s hide that much. I have a 7mm08 for the windy days . Here Is a link for the gun. Remington 700 LVSF

I think the only advantage to going with the .223 is the price of ammo. If you reload then its a no brainer. The 22-250 does have the better balistics.

I have a 22-250 and I think its much better then the 223 for hunting dogs.

22-250 is a good way to go for the larger vermin. Even chucks. If your even thinking about p-dogs, gophers, ground squirrls, get the .223. You can ruin a 22-250 in one trip if you can't control yourself.
My next varmint rifle is going to be a .204 Ruger.

If you reload, I'd consider the .223 WSSM or .243 WSSM for varmints. Another option is the .220 Swift. . .

If you don't reload, I'd settle for a .223 or .22-250.

I've shot both guns on rodent type varmints and the .22-250 has an edge in cutting through the wind.

Won't say it has and edge on distance as I've popped prairie dogs with my .223 at 550 yards.
Furtherest I've shot them with the .22-250 was 450. Reason is "it happened to be the gun I was carrying at the time".

One advantage to the .223 is the ammo is lots smaller and that's an advantage if you're walking the prairie hunting prairie dogs. I usually measured my ammo by the "quart" when I carried it.

Military cases aren't a cost advantage anymore for the .223 since bulk commercial cases are available. The commercial cases are easier to load than military cases as some of the old primer pockets (military) were a bit tight.

So, my recommendation would be to pick up which ever caliber you'd like. The .22-250 has an edge for velocity and wind bucking, but that's it.

I still have both rifles (in Model 700VS). Old Remingtons were the most accurate.
