Those are great pictures.

I would like people to look at the anal fin on the canary. It is a sharper point with flat sides. On the yelloweye the same fin is rounded and sometimes have black edges on the fins. You cant see this fin on the YE in the picture.

Rockfish colors can be darker or lighter too. Juvenile YE have two white stripes on their body and usually a deeper color.

looking at all the different orange and red rockfish species, i'm glad that i fish shallow water and only have to deal with a few species and not deal with any barotrauma.

the problem with rockfish ID amongst sport fishermen is that it is difficult for even experienced fishermen. even tougher for the multitude of anglers who have never seen most of those species of rockfish but head out halibut fishing.

gonna be tough to educate the masses on rockfish ID. worthwhile but tough considering the number of sportfishermen that keep chinook during pink seasons.

Here's are a pair of Yelloweye caught in Alaska some years back.

I have to admit that I sometimes struggle on ID's myself despite having fished for rockfish for over 50 year's and co-authored a book on fishing for them back in the late 1970's.

Ok, I emailed Jamie regarding supporting science. If I can get a copy I might be able to do something effective with it. Anybody find it, let me know please. I'll get busy for awhile.

I think you should get a reply from Jamie, I can't print mine without her permission, but I will say that there are points I agree with and others I don't. We have differences in what we think are best approaches to Rockfish conservation and harvest, but there may be a middle ground.

I personally feel that it is wasteful to discard Rockfish that are not allowed in the regulations and it would be better to allow one or two per daily limit while educating sportfishermen to learn how to use release methods for Rockfish experiencing decompression sickness. I would also encourage sportsfishermen to fish shallower when not seeking Halibut and Lingcod and encourage them to release any RF not suffering from decompression,that would be from the surface to 60 feet down.

Federal regulations regarding Canary and Yelloweye RF need to be considerd

In the case of Black,Blue,Yellowrtail RF, C&R and keeping a limit can be both accomplished as long as it is done without violating possession limits.

Leadhead jigs with barb less hooks fished no deeper that 60 will go a long way in doing this.

I have tha data from him. He took the WDFW sample report and then skewed the data to fit what he wanted as an end result.

Jamie calls "protected rockfish" anything other than a black or blue.

One thing that needs to be considered is the economic impact on coastal communities if bottomfish is further restricted.

I'd like to see by-catch numbers from trawlers and trollers in comparison to those numbers quoted by Jamie of sports fishermen seeking Lingcod and Cabezon?

While I no longer fish the coast since I no longer have a boat, the numbers quoted are far higher than I experienced when I was targeting lingcod. Maybe it was the methods I and my buddies used, but if those numbers are correct, which I would question, it would be better to allow retainment of some of those Roclfish as part of a legal possession limit.

Public-comment deadline extended
on proposed state sportfishing rules

OLYMPIA – The public will have more time to review proposed changes to state sportfishing rules under an extended comment period announced today by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Under the new timeline, WDFW will accept written comments through Jan. 29 on the proposed regulations – more than a month longer than previously announced.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission, which sets policy for WDFW, also has postponed a public hearing on the proposals until its February meeting in Olympia. Written testimony also can be submitted during that meeting.

The commission is now scheduled to take action on the proposed rule changes during its March meeting in Moses Lake.

Craig Burley, WDFW fish division manager, said the public hearing was postponed to allow for additional time to draft the rule language that the commission will consider.

“Making that change also gives people more time to review and provide comments on the proposals,” Burley said.
