Children shot and killed at Connecticut school.


....(Reuters) - A shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday, killing several people including children, the Hartford Courant newspaper reported.

The shooter was also killed, the Courant said.

Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade - roughly ages 5 to 10.

Television images showed police and ambulances at the scene, and parents rushing toward the school. Parents were seen reuniting with their children and taking them home.

All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.

The shooter, an adult, was dead and two handguns were recovered from the scene, NBC News reported without citing a source.

Danbury Hospital, about 11 miles west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: "They are very serious injuries."

A girl interviewed by NBC Connecticut described hearing seven loud "booms" as she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to a nearby office, she said.

"A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did," the unidentified girl said on camera.

One child was carried from Sandy Hook Elementary School by a police officer, and the child appeared to have been wounded, the town's weekly newspaper, the Newtown Bee, said on its website.

Connecticut State Police said its officers were at the scene with local police but provided no additional details. The emergency call to police occurred at 9:41 a.m., state police said.

An individual answering the phone at the Newtown Police Department declined to comment.

Newtown, with a population about 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City.

Sandy Hook is one of four elementary schools in the district.

The United States has experienced a number of mass shooting rampages this year, most recently in Oregon, where a gunman opened fire at a shopping mall on Tuesday, killing two people and then himself.

trully a very sad messed up situation. beyond mind boggling. i can't imagine what the parents of the lost children must be feeling. trully disturbing to say the least.

Heartbreaking is a huge understatement.

Got alittle choked up watching sports center today with my 2 year old daughter siting on my lap. Cant imagine what it would be like saying good by forever.

I just can't concieve of why someone would do this. One of the highlights of my life is looking into the smiling faces of my grandkids, nieces and nephews when they see me. What is better in life than that? To kill a child is unspeakably evil. I still think about my time onboard my ship in VN and shelling as directed by the spotters but not really knowing who it was we were killing. You hope it's NVA or VC but in your mind you know, that at some point in time, there were probably children in the hot zone. Things like this bring it all back.

dont try to think about why someone will do something like this, you will just frustrate and upset yourself because the fact is, none of us can grasp it, mental health issues are serious things that not alot are known about... we know nothing about this 20 year old that did this, how he was brought up, ect... it could be a myriad of reasons of what caused him to snap...

all guns were registered to his mother, so, hes been around guns and such, as well as she... but was he abused? molested? bullied? who knows, but its deffinately messed up for sure...

brace for the upcoming sh!t storm that is about to be upon us for gun control, there are far too many people in this country that think guns are the problem, not knowing that in China, they dont use guns, they walk into class rooms and chop kids up with machetes...

evil will come out of people regardless of what tool they wield, if they have the desire to inflict harm, they will... we need to focus on that part of it, what makes people do it, not what people do it with...

I don't know what I'd do........God help these parents.

These scum are probably raised where everyone gets a trophy, there are no winners or losers and they can't understand why they don't own a $300,000 auto and a mansion like everyone on TV has without working for it.
