Looks like pro cyclists have to sacrifice their integrity as part of the price to be a world class contender. That's quite a price because the vast majority don't make millions. They barely make a living on a lot of pro teams.

I wonder if doping is as prevalent in other sports, or if the extreme oxygen requirements of endurance cycling make it more likely for cyclists to dope than athletes in other sports.

My best freind growing up was a very good cyclist. I remember talking to him around the time Armstrong was taking off. He figured he was in the top 100 in the US, but stated only the very top making any money. He had a family and decided to quit since he saw no way of catching up with the very elite. I know doping was not in his mind, and vaguely remember talking about Armstrong and him beleiving that he never doped either. If the only ones making money were all cheating, and some of them made millions, how should my freind (and all the others who believed that the others were just better) feel. I am not saying he would have made it, but it sucks that he never was given a chance. I truely feel that what Armstrong did was akin to fraud and every penny he made taken back, including the money paid by sponsors since they were acting on fraudualent claims made by him.

One of my roomates in college was in the US Olympic road biking program and likely would have made the team if he hadn't quit. He hated it and said the sport was smoke and mirrors and totally depressing once you saw how thing worked behind the scenes.
